Day 53 - James Blunt - You're Beautiful

DAY 53
James Blunt– “You’re Beautiful”
From Back To Bedlam

My pick today is on the more mellow but main stream side of things. I really did fall in love with this song the first time I heard it. Although, admittedly, radio nearly killed it for me with the massive over play.

I really like the vulnerability of James’ voice and his writing style. Many of the songs on this album sound a lot the same, but he is still a very talented and enjoyable performer.

Day 52 - The Band - The Weight

DAY 52
The Band– “The Weight”
From Music from Big Pink

Glenn and I were listening to this song as we headed over to a friends house last night and I was reminded of my love for this song. Well written, keeps your attention, interesting harmonies, very solid.

I miss this kind of rock and roll. Very genuine, a little rough around the edges, and just cool. Long live our classic rock heroes.

Day 51 - Ween - Freedom of '76

DAY 51
Ween– “Freedom of ‘76”
From Chocolate and Cheese

Freedom of ’76… this song, for being rather silly just grooves me in all the right places.

The vocals in this song just knock me off my feet in truth. It is very soulful and just plain fun!

Ween tends to be such a silly group, but don’t let that fool you, these are very talented musicians and singers and worth a listen or two!

Day 50 - Feist - Tout Doucement

DAY 50
Feist– “Tout Doucement”
From Let It Die

I was just singing this little tune to myself and thought it would be a lovely pick as today has been a relaxing yet productive day. This fine little song is so cheerful and upbeat, it perfectly suites and reflects my mood. Even in French!

Tout doux, tout doux, tout doucement
Toujours, tout doux, tout doucement
Comme ça
La vie c'est épatant

Tout doux, tout doux, tout doucement
Toujours, tout doux, tout doucement
Comme ça
La vie je la comprends

N'allez jamais trop vite

N'allez jamais trop vite
En aimant simplement
Pour avoir de la réussite
Soyez très très prudent
L'amour alors viendra
Se blottir dans vos bras

Tout doux, tout doux, tout doucement
Toujours, tout doux, tout doucement
Comme ça
En flânant gentiment
En souriant gentiment
En flânant gentiment
Tout doucement

Day 49 - Jimi Hendrix - Angel

DAY 49
Jimi Hendrix– “Angel”
From Cry of Love

Today I am choosing a Jimi Hendrix song Glenn introduced me to when we first started dating. Angel is an amazing song. Musically, lyrically, vocally… it just grabs your attention and holds it.

This song has an amazing groove and a rougher edge of soul.

Obviously Jimi was one of the great innovative guitarists and performers of classic rock, but I love this softer more soulful side to him as well.

My favorite lyric in the song is:

Angel came down
From heaven yesterday,
Stayed with me just long enough
To rescue me....

And she told me a story yesterday;
About the sweet love
Between the moon and the deep blue sea.

Then she spread her wings high over me.
She said, I’ll come back again to see you tomorrow....

Good stuff…

Day 48 - Connie Francis - Al Di La

DAY 48
Connie Francis– “Al Di La”

Connie Francis is one of my favorite singers of all time. Ever since I was a child I can remember being in awe of her powerful vocals.

My Mom used to dance and sing Connie Francis songs when I was little. I can remember times when my Mom had her “private Mom time” and she would hang a curtain over the doorway to the living room and tell us kids to go play in our rooms for awhile and she would crank up the music and sing and dance to her music. A lot of times she would just turn on the radio, but more often she would throw on her records. Connie Francis was among her favorites.

Most assuredly this will not be the last time Connie shows up on my top 10,000 list, but this song is special because my Mom would sing it loud and clear with or without the album. I don’t know exactly why, but I always felt that Mom was happy when she sang this song in particular. My Mom has a beautiful voice, especially when she was younger she was a powerhouse vocalist. She loves singing songs that are almost operatic. She had the range to pull it off. She still does to a point. I get a lot of my natural powerful vocal ability from her I think.

The soundtrack to my life plays on…

DAY 47
Atlanta Rhythm Section– “Indigo Passion”
From Underdog

I have had this song on my mind all day! Just a few nights ago Glenn and I were listening to it in his van and analyzing the lyrics and for as many times as I have heard the song I never really analyzed the lyrics.

It really is genius. The way they use colors throughout the song to describe the story, feelings, and events. It is really really neat.

I have been into this style of song all weekend. This kind of music is very therapeutic for me. “Indigo Passion” is very much in the same vein as yesterday’s pick, “Thirteen” by Big Star. Gotta love those pretty acoustic guitars.

Day 46 - Big Star - Thirteen

DAY 46
Big Star– “Thirteen”
From #1 Record

My song choice today is Big Star's "Thirteen.' i am rather surprised that I have not chosen this song thus far as it is certainly one of my favorite songs of all time.

My favorite line is absolutely, "Would you be an outlaw for my love..." Something very romantic and nostalgic about that lyric.

I was reminded how much I enjoy that song today while singing it with my family. The song is so simple. but so complex. I love a song that is magical without over doing it.

Glenn and I were introduced to Big Star in a round about way when we lived in Pullman, WA. I remember nights sitting by the camp fire or out by the pool and singing that song with him as well. We made our own magical memories. That is what I believe a truly amazing song is... one that provides inspiration and magic for years to come.

DAY 45
Petula Clark– “Downtown”
From "Downtown"

I will be keeping this short the next day or two most likely due to time constraints imposed by the holiday events.

But regardless, I must make my song choice of the day!

So today I choose Britain’s beloved Petula Clark with “Downtown.”

This song is just a hopeful and fun song. An oldie but a goodie.

From In Between Dreams

This song has been running through my head for the last few days so I had to pick it for my song of the day.

Day 43 - The Sweet -Little Willy

DAY 43
The Sweet– “Little Willy”
From 1972 single release (with "Man From Mecca")

So here’s a switch. The Sweet with “Little Willy.”

So maybe it is a little goofy, but this song has a great beat, some seriously cool switches, and was so fun to torment my little brother with. (I think he has forgiven me by now.)

As far as the band goes this little blurb says a lot about the band itself:

Formed in England in 1968 by Tucker and Connolly who first met as members of Middlesex pop outfit Wainwright's Gentlemen. Group split up and Mick and Brian recruited Frank Torpey and Steve Priest to form the Sweet Shop, soon shortened to The Sweet. Recorded a string a flop singles in true Bubblegum spirit by featuring Connolly on vocals and the rest of Sweet being replaced by studio musicians. Releasing singles on the Fontana and Parlophone labels, The Lollipop Man, All You'll Ever Get From Me, Get On The Line (written by The Archie's songwriting team Barry/Kim), and It's Lonely Out There were typical of chart dominating American Bubblegum and totally inconspicuous amongst their other, weaker Monkee/Herman Hermits material. Torpey left and Andy Scott was recruited to add a heavier rock sound and they subsequently met British songwriting ream Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman in 1970. Chinn-Chapman along with Phil Wainman produced and wrote their singles over the next four years. The collaboration worked and they were greeted with U.K. success as Funny Funny, Co-Co, Poppa Joe, Wig Wam Bam, Blockbuster and Hellraiser made the charts. Little Willy (They said "Little Willy"!) and Ballroom Blitz were big U.S. hits as well and became instantly recognizable Bubblegum classics (Mike Myers acknowledged this in Wayne's World). On stage, Sweet mixed elements of Glam with outrageous costumes (Indian attire for Wig Wam Bam; oh, the influence of 1910 Fruitgum Co.!) and sexually-charged theatrics with their hybrid Bubblegum/Heavy Rock repertoire. The group was still augmented by studio sessionmen although they were allowed to record self-penned B-sides. By their third full album, the classic 1974 DESOLATION BOULEVARD, they attempted to rid themselves of restrictive bubblegum image by splitting from Chinn-Chapman and proved immediately that they could survive on their own when Fox On The Run became a big hit. They followed up with hits Action and Love Is Like Oxygen in 1979. Brian Connolly left the group after LEVEL HEADED failed and Sweet developed into a hard rock group without much success before splitting in 1982. Andy Scott continues to tour as AS Sweet and Connolly died in February 1997

This song is just fun, kicky, and creates a good vibe for me.

Day 42 - Ellis Paul - Just the Jester Fool

DAY 42
Ellis Paul– “Just the Jester Fool”
From Say Something

Day 42 has to be a sweet and special song. Because 42 is a very cool number for many cool reasons.

And so I feel it appropriate to pick another Ellis Paul song today. Just the Jester Fool. What a fun little song. It has a happy upbeat guitar line and just feels so good to listen to.

As always, the story is intriguing and draws you in.

My favorite line is, “It’s 6am and the alarm clock goes off and I realize I’m not used to looking at this particular ceiling. Then she taps me on the shoulder with an empty shoe and she says, ‘Cinderella, does this belong to you?’”

Brilliant!!!

Day 41 - ABBA - One of Us

DAY 41
ABBA– “One of Us”
From The Visitors

Again another big shift of genre!

ABBA! One of my Dad’s fav bands. Growing up my Dad had an extreme appreciation for ABBA.

“One of Us” is a song that lyrically says very little, but is very relatable. But in it’s simplicity it covers the subject matter of a seemingly serious issue in a relationship.

I really don’t think ABBA gets the respect they deserve. A lot of their arrangements were very unique and different, and their vocals very engaging and enjoyable.

I have a few ABBA favorites, but I would have to say this track would be in my top 5 ABBA fav’s.

Day 40 - Babes In Toyland - Handsome And Gretel

DAY 40
Babes In Toyland– “Handsome And Gretel”
From Fontanelle

So I am skipping around a bit in my genres, but let’s face it, deep down I am a rocker chick.

One of the bands that most inspired me starting around age 16 was Babes In Toyland. I had the pleasure of seeing them live opening for White Zombie in the summer of 1995. It was a GREAT show. Sure, you had your major ass wipes giving them hell, telling them to raise their skirts and all kinds of immature garbage like that, but these ladies rocked on… the more they were taunted the harder they rocked. They were absolutely amazing. I was very impressed.

This song in particular struck a chord with me due to the sheer vulgarity in the lyrical content. I loved how nasty it is! Not because I am fond of being vulgar exactly, but these were GIRLS talking about stuff that was stereo-typically taboo.

Yeeeeah… they kind blew those stereo-types down and stomped the hell outta them with this song.

It rocks hard, it is unapologetic, and I love it!

Day 39 - The Raspberries - I Wanna Be With You

DAY 39
The Raspberries– “I Wanna Be With You”

Ah, yes… I am surprised it took me so long to pick a song by The Raspberries. It is hard to pick a favorite of theirs but this specific songs holds many good memories for me.

My Dad has a HUGE classic rock collection of 45 records and this was one of my all time favorites to listen to. This song, “I Wanna Be With You” was on one side, and their song “Go All The Way” was on the other. What a 2 hit punch.

I can recall certain nights that my Dad would be in a mood to listen to his old 45’s and my little brother, older sister and I would dance like crazy to all the songs Dad would put on. Sometimes Dad would dance with us. Mom usually peeked in on us and smiled and laughed while either cooking dinner or doing dishes to catch some of our legendary dance moves. *LOL*

It amazes me how most of the memorable events in my life are attached to a song. It is beautiful.

DAY 38
King Harvest– “Dancing In The Moonlight”

Another missed day yesterday. Too much to do, too little time. Etc., etc., etc…

And so today I choose one of my favorite classic rock songs. Every time I hear “Dancing In The Moonlight” I feel as though I was given a shot of instant happy. I love the groove and the good vibes the songs invokes.

I have had many a morning listening to the classic rock or oldies station and had this song come on at just the right time to give me what I need to make it through the day with a more positive attitude and outlook.

Good vibes, good tunes, good stuff.

Day 37 - Mazzy Star - Fade Into You

DAY 37
Mazzy Star– “Fade Into You”
From So Tonight That I Might See

Fade Into You... Oh so many good memories that come with this song... I remember when Glenn and I were first married we would put this CD on for mood music when we felt especially snuggly and romantic, and we always started with this song...

Mazzy Star has one of those distinct and unique voices that is almost hollow but like a soft echo streaming through your home.

Whenever I listen to her music I feel like I am in a huge castle like structure... a place so big everyone’s voices echo…

Romantic, magical, mysterious… yeah this song is a winner for sure.

Day 36 - Aimee Mann - Red Vines

DAY 36
Aimee Mann – “Red Vines”
From Bachelor No. 2

Skipped another day yesterday by accident... Well due to illness really... I did not feel well yesterday and have not felt great today... I fell asleep and woke up too late to get my entry in yesterday, so again we move on.

My song choice today is that of the amazingly talented Aimee Mann. Though I have many favorite songs by Aimee, on this album especially, this song is one of my absolute favorites.

The songwriting and, as I always seem to mention, the story telling, are just outstanding on this song. I also LOVE the harmonies. They are almost hypnotic.

Aimee may have been better known for the song “Voices Carry” back in the ‘80’s, but in my opinion, her more recent material far surpasses the ‘80’s era…

This song brings back nostalgic memories for me... it reminds me of a simpler time when my best friends and I would go out cruising in my electric purple 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais from Friday through Sunday morning... smoking cigarettes and literally munching on red vines, (funny enough), enjoying each other’s company, getting into minimal trouble, breaking minimal laws, ticketing police cars, drinking bad coffee at Denny's until the early hours of the morning, skinny dipping, ahhh... good times... good times...

Day 35 - Beverly Bremers - Don't Say You Don't Remember

DAY 35
Beverly Bremers – “Don’t Say You Don’t Remember”
From Original single release only and later available on The Very Best of Beverly Bremers “Don’t Say You Don’t Remember” and on various other compilation albums of popular ’70 hits

Tonight I am choosing a song I fell in love with in a round about way. I discovered 2 significant gems while watching the movie “Me, Myself, & Irene.”

One being my musical hero Ellis Paul… the other was this song but not performed by Beverly Bremers. It was this song only be covered and performed by the angelic spawn of James Taylor and Carly Simon… lil miss Sally Taylor. I ADORE Sally’s version of this song, but sadly I have never been able to find a purchasable copy of Sally’s rendition.

Glenn and I did research on both songs that attracted our attention in the film and discovered that Beverly Bremers had originally written and performed “Don’t Say You Don’t Remember” back in 1971.

It is funny because the words aren’t really the truly amazing part of the song, but rather the PASSION with which she sings the lyrics. You can feel the emotion and the yearning. It is so powerful and beautiful.

An excellent track and an essential part of any good music library for sure!

Day 34 - Blues Brothers - Rubber Biscuit

DAY 34
Blues Brothers – “Rubber Biscuit”
From Briefcase Full of Blues

I have picked my favorite Blues Brothers track today. I don’t know why. It just felt right.

This track is just so hilarious, cute, and classic!

Glenn introduced me to the Blues Brothers when we first met… We have had a lot of fun drives listening to this tune.

We also very much enjoy the first Blues Brothers film. The best line from the film in my opinion:

"It's 106 miles to Chicago...we have a full tank of gas...a half pack of cigarettes....it's dark...and we're wearing sunglasses.....HIT IT"

DAY 33
Cheap Trick – “I Want You To Want Me”
From Live At Budokan

So, sadly, I missed my second top 10,000 day. I knew there’d be a few of those… sometimes you just can not avoid it. Oh well, on with the list!

Today I am choosing an especially good track and one of my favorite songs of all time!

This is just a feel good song, this specific version especially. I think it is kind of magical when a song is more enjoyable live than on the CD, not all artists can pull that off. But these fella’s are so super talented they make it look easy.

Great song, always makes me wanna boogie and dance, and makes me feel good… you can’t beat that!

Day 32 - Antje Duvekot - Dandelion

DAY 32
Antje Duvekot – “Dandelion”
From Boys, Flowers, Miles

This is one of my many favorite Antje Duvekot songs. I was blessed with the experience of Antje’s music at an Ellis Paul concert in Seattle, Wa., in April 2006 and was literally blown away.

Antje is so sweet, talented, and inviting. She makes you feel like she is an old friend even if it is your first time seeing her. She has the gift of story telling and throughout her performances she keeps you laughing and entertained 100% of the time.

Her vocals are so spot on and unique. She captures the same magic in a live show as she does on her CD’s if not more!

Usually when you go to a concert to see a specific artist you are ok with missing the opening act, but Antje was so amazing and such a treat to get to see live.

Dandelion is another one of those amazing relatable songs for me… it also is so incredibly descriptive in the lyric writing that you can actually see the story in your mind as the song plays.

A folk legend in the making… yes Miss Antje Duvekot has MUCH to offer the world of music and I look forward to ever note!

Day 31 - John Hiatt - Have A Little Faith In Me

DAY 31
John Hiatt – “Have A Little Faith In Me”
From Bring The Family

Funny enough I discovered this song, (like many of my favorites), from a movie soundtrack.

I first heard this song on the movie “Benny & Joon”, which, funny enough, was primarily filmed right here in Spokane.

To me a song is very amazing if it draws your attention more than the images in the film.

This song is just sung with so much passion...power... emotion! Others have attempted to cover this song, but John Hiatt owns it. No doubt. The message is so romantic and hopeful. I am such a mushy girl. I just adore a good love song.

Day 30 - Sarah McLachlan - Train Wreck

DAY 30
Sarah McLachlan – “Train Wreck”
From Afterglow

So I am choosing one of my more unlikely favorites from the Sarah McLachlan album Afterglow.

I was having a hard time picking a song because I usually choose something that depicts what I am feeling at that time. And tonight it just was not coming to me. And then this song popped into my head and as I read and remembered the lyrics I thought, “Wow, this is perfect today.”

I love this whole album and am a pretty dedicated Sarah McLachlan fan overall, but this song, even despite the very different non folky mix mesmerizes me.

Your love in all its finery
Tear up the darkness all around me
Until I can breathe again
Until I believe again

Cause I'm a train wreck
Waiting to happen
Waiting for someone to come pick me up off the tracks
A wildfire borne of frustration
Borne of the one love that gets me so high
I've no fear at all

But your eyes like midnight fireflies
Light up the trenches where my heart lies
Until I can see again
Find my way back again

Cause I'm a train wreck
Waiting to happen
Waiting for someone to come pick me up off the tracks
A wildfire borne of frustration
Borne of the one love that gets me so high

I've no fear at all
To fall so deep into you
Lose myself completely
In your sweet embrace
All my pain's erased

And your mouth, it's all that I wish
Mercy of your lips, just one kiss
Until I can breathe again
Until I can sing again

Cause I'm a train wreck
Waiting to happen
Waiting for someone to come pick me up off the tracks
A wildfire borne of frustration
Borne of the one love that gets me so high

I've no fear at all
To fall so deep into you
Lose myself completely

DAY 29
Dar Williams – “Christians And The Pagans”
From Mortal City

I am choosing a "Rachael Fun Song" today! I ADORE this specific Dar Williams track. This is the one that made me fall in love with her music. I seriously listened to this song AT LEAST 25 times in a row the first day I heard it.

The visuals in the lyrics and the story telling are just spectacular in this song.

I was also pleased to learn that Dar Williams backed up my hero, Ellis Paul a time or two. On one specific and wonderful song "Angel In Manhattan."

Day 28 - Kathy Mattea - Where've You Been

DAY 28
Kathy Mattea – “Where've You Been”
From Willow In The Wind

Tonight’s pick is appropriate for many reasons.

I truly love this song. It always makes me cry. It never used to. It came out in 1989 and I was only 12.

What I did not know about life, love, happiness, and pain then I do know now. I have experienced enough to be able to whole heartedly relate to this song on every level possible. Of that I am confident.

For me, love and music are joined in the blessed and grotesque union that plays the soundtrack to my life. (If that makes sense.) If my life were a movie this song would play through the years when Glenn’s and my relationship became very real and concrete.

Even concrete relationships can crack and become unstable, but with some tender love, care, and hard work they can make it through.

Foundations can be rocked, but somehow, when it is worth it, we work together to salvage the strength and love that we know is there because we can’t go on without it.

There are relationships like the one I am in where your mate becomes as necessary as air. I wrote in one of my original compositions that “every breath you take it's me who really breathes.” And so the line in this song, “I’m just not myself when you’re away”, rings truer than ever for me.

Day 27 - Glenn Case - Rachael

DAY 27
Glenn Case – “Rachael”
From Glenn case (no specific album)

I am choosing my song today. Literally, because this song was written for me by my husband, Glenn Case.

It just suites me today to remember and listen to this song.

I remember saying to Glenn, I wish there was a Rachael song besides the one we could think of by Basia called "Take Him Back Rachel." And how I always thought that'd be neat to have a song with your name in it written especially for you. I would feel like Sara that "Sara Smile" was written for, or the infamous "Sharona" or whatever. Silly, but that is me.

So, he humored me and my song was born. Thanks babe. :)
