Day 193 - Jim Croce - Lover's Cross

DAY 193
Jim Croce – "Lover's Cross”
From "I Got A Name"

This is one of the most beautiful Jim Croce songs in his catalog of material. I was not as familiar with this track until Glenn decided to learn it and played it for me one warm summer day out at my folks place.

The lyrics, like many of Croce's songs, are absolutely engaging...

"But I hope that you can find another
Who can take what I could not
He'll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
'Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain't 'bout to start nothin' new
And baby I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you"

Very powerful...

Here is a VERY stellar live performance of Jim Croce performing this beautiful song.

Day 192 - Cristopher Lucas - The Mudder

DAY 192
Cristopher Lucas – "The Mudder”
From "Cruxlife vol.1"

Crux
noun ( the crux)
the decisive or most important point at issue : the crux of the matter is that attitudes have changed.
literally cross
crux
noun
heart, essence, central point, main point, core, center, nucleus, kernel; bottom line.

Life
noun
vitality

Cristopher Lucas... another amazing "local" talent. Cris is well traveled. (Check out this CD Baby profile and Cris's MySpace for some info.)

Cris is a very genuine and passionate singer/songwriter and just about the nicest and most charismatic fellow you might ever encounter. Cris has the ability to electrify a crowd with his voice and an acoustic guitar. He is yet another performer who you can appreciate immensely on a recording, but his real magic is experienced in a live show. Even in small venues he just rocks the joint!

This specific song, "The Mudder", is a song that everyone gets up onto their feet for and gets involved with the performance. If you EVER get a chance to see Cris play a show, DO NOT miss it, he will amaze you!!!

Day 191 - The Clash - Spanish Bombs

DAY 191
The Clash – "Spanish Bombs”
From "London Calling"

This song is extremely energetic and FUN!

The Clash just had a way about them... Not the best singers, but geniuses just the same!

The album version of this holds a little more magic for me personally. It is so fast it just seemed hard for them to capture the same sound in a live performance, but you can totally feel their passion and their energy!

Freakin' awesome track!

Day 188 - KITE - Apple Wine

DAY 188
KITE – "Apple Wine”
From "Lost All Age"

These guys have made amazing music together for a long time. They are a local band in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. KITE is made up of some very unique, talented, kind, and passionate individuals who live, eat, and breath for their music and each other.

I have rarely seen a tighter group of people all working toward a goal so well and in such perfect harmony. (No pun intended.)

Despite rocky spots and challenges they have faced they have always remained focused on what is important. Their friendships and their music.

It seriously amazes me that the guys have not been discovered yet. Talk about your diamond in the rough. They are arena ready. Their sound is special and well crafted. They are just a treat to listen to and especially to listen to live. You can't fully experience KITE without going to one of their shows.

This song, Apple Wine, is probably in my top 5 favorite KITE songs as it is the first of theirs I fell totally in love with. We were the annoying folks in the crowd CONSTANTLY requesting to hear it. It is just THAT good. What can I say, I know what I like.

Check these guys out when you have a chance. You will not be disappointed. :)

DAY 185
Bjork – "It's Oh So Quiet”
From "Post"

I am picky about my Bjork favorite songs... she is an odd lil tater... :P But this song is especially wonderful. It starts out so soft and gentle and then hits you with those big band kind of horns and that big voice... it is a charming tune, a lot of fun, and super wonderful!

I found the video on YouTube for some visual and sound stimulation. How nice am I?! :P

Day 184 - Ellis Paul - Maria's Beautiful Mess

DAY 184
Ellis Paul – "Maria's Beautiful Mess”
From "Ellis Paul Live"

Between "Here She Is", (which was my first pick on my top 10,000 favorite song list), and this song, "Maria's Beautiful Mess" Glenn says he finds the best ways to describe me through someone else's song. That is really cool to me since I am such an avid Ellis Paul fan.

This song is fabulously descriptive, romantic, and gorgeous. A must hear for any folk music lover for sure.

This YouTube clip is a great example of how amazing this man sounds in his live performances.

On a side note this really cool news came out today through the Ellis Paul fan boards and I am posting it everywhere as this is a pretty big deal for Ellis. Check it out:

Karen Z and Ellis beat the Wikipedia odds!!

Dear Friends of Ellis.... Over the course of a decade of managing Ellis Paul, I have been surrounded by a number of very enthusiastic, skilled and competent fans who have helped spread his music all around the globe. One of these folks is Karen Zundel from Pittsburgh, Pa.

Karen has been working tirelessly on writing an Ellis Paul article for Wikipedia over the past several months. On Feb. 23, 2007, the article received the Feature Article rating - the highest rating in Wikipedia. At that time, the article was nominated to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page. The Main Page receives nearly 3 million unique visits each day.

Karen and I are happy to report that the Ellis Paul article has been selected to appear on the Wikipedia Main Page TOMORROW, Tuesday, May 22, 2007.

To put this into some perspective, at this time there are:

1,785,823 articles in Wikipedia
1398 of those have achieved the rating Feature Article
94 of those Feature Articles are in the category Music
35 of those Music Feature Articles are biographies
(Only) 3 of those music biographies are folk musicians: Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and Ellis Paul.

In the history of Wikipedia, only one folk musician has ever been featured on the Main Page: Bob Dylan - on May 17, 2004.

This coming Tuesday, May 22, 2007, Ellis Paul will be the second folk musician ever to be featured. I am thrilled and humbled at the prospect of not only bringing attention to Ellis Paul, but to folk music in general, and hopefully to many of the artists mentioned within the article.

The Main page link is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Please pass along this information to anyone who you think may be interested... Thanks to Karen and all the fans of Ellis who work hard to spread the music...

Best Regards,

Ralph Jaccodine
manager

Day 183 - Paul Westerberg - Lookin' Up In Heaven

DAY 183
Paul Westerberg – "Lookin' Up In Heaven”
From "Folker"

This is a very gorgeous song by Paul Westerberg. The lyrics are especially touching.

Glenn sings a mean rendition of this song as well. ;)

I came across this awesome session video, of Paul performing this awesome song. It is SO worth a watch watch and a listen listen. ;)The off notes he sings always add to the perfect imperfections.

Day 181 - Richie Sambora - One Light Burning

DAY 181
Richie Sambora – "One Light Burning”
From "Stranger In This Town"

I have not thought about this song for awhile, but I really enjoy it. In truth I love Richie Sambora's voice and songwriting style. I can safely say I enjoy the sound of Richie's voice more than Jon Bon Jovi's. Not to discredit Jon, as he too is a very good vocalist, but there is a bluesy quality to Richie's voice that my ears are drawn to.

Funny enough, this album was the first gift Glenn ever bought me. I owned the CD but Glenn bought me the special box set with the cool guitar pick necklace in it. :P That was super sweet. I remember thinking how cool that was... ahhh, memories... memories...

Check out the video on YouTube. It was pretty darn cool for the era.

Glenn was showing me a version of this song he sang on this website he came across called www.singshot.com and I decided at that moment to choose this as my song for today as he sang a version on Sing Shot that I thought was really fun and good. Day 179 - Bonnie Raitt - I Can't Make You Love Me

DAY 179
Bonnie Raitt – "I Can't Make You Love Me”
From "Luck of the Draw"

This song came on in the grocery store tonight when Glenn and I were walking around doing the dreaded and always procrastinated trip to buy food. (We always put it off until we just about can't put it off anymore.)

This song is so powerful to me. It rings so true to the broken hearted. When you want to be wanted so bad, but you know the feeling is not mutual. That is probably one of the most insanely difficult realizations I think a person can ever experience. When your love is so true and sure, and the other person is not "there" with you.

The arrangement is so beautiful and Bonnie's voice is so clear and genuine. She is one amazing vocalist and songwriter.

This YouTube video is an exceptionally fabulous live performance of the song.

Ween – "Baby Bitch”

This song is rather surprising as are most songs by the band Ween. It is very very pretty and mellow. The song really throws you for a loop lyrically, however. Very surprising and because the lyrics are so surprising you are drawn in to the song.

Bon Jovi – "Prayer '94”

This particular version of this song is just gorgeous. I especially like Ritchie Sambora's backing vocals. I like this slowed down more intense version. This proves my love for the butt rock/hair bands... (Which I affectionately refer to as "butthair bands", just melding the 2 nicknames together... *LOL*)

DAY 167
Jewel – "Have A Little Faith In Me”
From "Phenomenon: Music From The Motion Picture"

So I picked this song earlier in my top 10,000 by the original artist, but I LOVE Jewel's version too. Her vocal is reminiscent of Janis Joplin in some spots which kicks ass especially for Jewel. I like some of Jewel's material but am picky about a lot of it. This recording is absolutely worth a listen...

DAY 166
Redbone – "Come And Get Your Love”
From Single release in 1974

So I know next to nothing about this band, but learned some cool facts about them while doing a small bit of research on this song. Very interesting history that is worth a read. I never knew they were all American Indians.... Ya learn something new every day!

I never even realized how much I enjoy this song until the other day and I was just driving along and movin' and groovin' to it.... it is one of my happy songs I guess and I did not even recognize it! :P
