Day 83 - Warrant - I Saw Red

DAY 83
Warrant –“I Saw Red”
From Cherry Pie

Egad! I missed my song yesterday! And so…. Enters… the BUTT ROCK!

Yes, I too was a child of the butt rock era. Let me tell you, long haired boys, in tight leather, with no regard for authority were right up my alley in my teen years. The Cherry Pie album by Warrant was one of my favorites.

I was going to pick a faster track, but I was feeling the ballads a little more tonight. I usually do. Gotta love those power ballads. :)

“I Saw Red” was one of my favorite video’s too. Not so much the acoustic version with shots of Janie Lane, (though that version is very pretty and probably my preferred version of the song itself being performed. Although, on a side note, Janie looks oddly like Goldie Hawn in this video for some odd reason?), but the full on version that was all black and white and the only color was things that were the color red. I thought that was so cool the first time I saw it.

Much like those old cherry 7UP commercials, those were rad! I remember my sister and I would record those commercials because we thought they were so cool. Funny enough re-watching those commercials I never realized Matt Leblanc from Friends fame appeared in a commercial for them! *LOL* Too funny. You learn something new every day! :)

It is funny as I re-watch Janie Lane in his pre celebrity fit club days I remember how sexy he once was before he drank himself into oblivion. So sad…

Day 82 - Hall & Oates - You Make My Dreams

DAY 82
Hall & Oates –“You Make My Dreams”
From Voices

This is one of my favorite Hall & Oates tracks of all time without question. I love the beat, I love that it is just fun, and I love how you can hear them having a blast making this song.

Hall & Oates may have a cheesy reputation among some, but they are both extremely talented. I think the time that they became popular was probably perfect for their style of music, but I think it has also blackened their reputation as credible artists to some people.

I just adore their music and have since I was a small child. It is funny that I would marry a Hall & Oates enthusiast.

Here is a look at Hall & Oates performing “You Make My Dreams” live.

Day 81 - Adam Sandler - Grow Old With You

DAY 81
Adam Sandler –“Grow Old With You”
From The Wedding Singer

So Glenn and I tried to go see some friends of ours play a show last night and about a half hour into the show I started feeling really sick and was having to deal with a lot of pain. So I asked Glenn if he would take me home and told him he could go back down to watch the rest of the show without me.

But my hubby being the sweet man that he is, put his night of entertainment and hanging out with friends aside to take care of me and make sure I was going to be alright.

His actions put me in mind of the song Adam Sadler he did in the movie The Wedding Singer. For any rough spots Glenn and I have ever had, we always seem to work things out one way or another, and when things get hard for one of us the other just automatically seems to kick into super protective care mode and takes care of business.

And I can see us growing old together and being each others support and greatest love of a lifetime. What we have is so rare and I cherish all of our quiet private times that no one else really sees or understands. Our relationship is so much deeper than just a marriage.

A funny note is the line in the song that says, “I’ll even let you hold the remote control.” That is a hilarious “game” between Glenn and I that I always have to have the remote and I always play at him that he is the remote thief. (Or ‘Mote thief! As I affectionately shriek at him when we are messing around.)

Good times even in bad times.

Day 80 - Shep & The Limelites - Daddy's Home

DAY 80
Shep & The Limelites –“Daddy’s Home”
From originally a single release/various compilation album releases

Glenn and I had one of those really great mornings. Sleeping in, snuggling in bed chatting and stuff. ;) Had some breakfast and some coffee and as usual we tried to get some chores done around the house. We HAVE to have music going pretty much 24/7 cuz that is just how we are, so Glenn set up the hard drive and set it to play on random through some of the billboard hits… this song came on and it just suited me so well today.

I am my mother’s daughter in that I am mesmerized by doo wop music. As much as I may love rock and folk music I have to admit the doo wop style has always intrigued me. I love the happy little tones they seem to have. Even on sad songs it sounds oddly happy.

This song of course is about a soldier returning from the war to the woman he loves and her having missed him terribly during his time away serving the country. That is pretty heavy and very romantic.

This song is just tight and precise in the harmonies and even though there is a tiny bit of a nasally lead vocal it really fits the song.

DAY 79
Stevie Wonder –“For Once In My Life”
From For Once In My Life

Glenn and I were heading to our friends house and listening to the top 100 billboard hits of 1968 and this song came on and I was reminded how much I love it.

I remember when I was a little kid that the first time I heard this song it was on a Disney "video" of all things. They ran a whole bunch of cartoon clips together and had this song on as the background. We had a whole bunch of those little cartoon videos. But I have always loved this song.

It is fun to just let loose, close your eyes, and belt out.

Stevie Wonder is a gift to the world of music in every way.

Day 78 - J. Geils Band - Centerfold

DAY 78
J. Geils Band –“Centerfold”
From Freeze Frame

This is my favorite J. Geils Band song for a couple reasons.

First of all the song is just super fun and danceable. I also love that my hubby sings it to me consistently because Rachael and Angel rhyme and so he sings it to me as, “My Rachael is a centerfold!”

He actually sang it to me at a karaoke deal we went to at the Days Inn motel near the Spokane air port that we were staying in for a training thing at my old place of employment. He came down in the crowd even and sang it directly to me. THAT was very hot. So yeah, I love this man. He rocked that song that night especially. :)

Day 77 - Rufus featuring Chaka Khan - Tell Me Something Good

DAY 77
Rufus featuring Chaka Khan –“Tell Me Something Good”
From Pure Funk (compilation CD/single version)

This one is a mover and a groover. It took me awhile to figure out where to find the specific version of this song that really gets me movin’ and shakin’, but it is the version on the Pure Funk Vol. 1 compilation. (Track #9)

All the other versions I heard were still good, but they really knocked it out of the park on this specific rendition.

Chaka Khan is an amazingly talented vocalist and this song showcases her voice in the most fantastic way. I LOVE the talk box in this song, I love the power in Chaka’s vocal, I just love this song… and I love these little tid bits about this song that I ran across while looking for this specific version as well:

“Rufus evolved from a group called The American Breed, who had a hit with "Bend Me, Shape Me." They took their name from a column in Popular Mechanics magazine called "Ask Rufus," later shortened to Rufus when Chaka Khan joined the band in 1972. One day, Stevie Wonder surprised the band with a song he wanted Rufus to record. Chaka didn't like it and said to him, "Thanks, but no thanks." Wonder wouldn't leave without giving the group SOMETHING. He asked for her birth sign ("Aries-Pisces") and wrote "Tell Me Something Good" on the spot. Wonder coached Chaka through the song. Chaka Khan: "I started singing the way I would have worked through it... and he said, 'No, no, no, sing it like THIS!" (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above) A wah-wah pedal was used on the guitar, but that's not what created the distorted "tell me" vocal in the chorus. That was done with a talkbox, an electronic device that allows the guitarist to "talk" by modulating sounds made through a tube that goes from his mouth to the device and into the output of the guitar's amp. Peter Frampton made the talkbox famous on the live versions of his hits "Show Me The Way" and "Do You Feel Like I Do?" This was the first and only hit credited to Rufus. Since her powerful vocals were clearly the focus of the group, they became known as Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan for their next album. In 1984, Chaka went solo.” - From Songfacts

Day 76 - Poe - Angry Johnny

DAY 76
Poe –“Angry Johnny”
From Hello

I loved this song the first time I heard it. There is such a devious seductive tone to this specific track.

It can be interpreted so many different ways depending on the mind set of the listener. Is it about her being too sexually deviant for her lover? Is it about just missing the one she loves or lusts after and is willing to do anything to get him back? Is she a stalker? Is she just trying to turn her lover on?

That is the great thing about this song… she leaves a lot to the imagination…

And it has a very danceable and grindable groove to it. Excellent mood music whether you are feeling saucy or you are just chillin’ out.

(The video to Angry Johnny is really excellent as well.)

Day 75 - Nelly (featuring Kelly Rowland) - Dilemma

DAY 75
Nelly (featuring Kelly Rowland) –“Dilemma”
From Nellyville

Glenn and I bought the new Karaoke Revolution American Idol PS2 game last night and this song is featured on the game.

Our friend Josh chose to sing it and he really made a good effort. That is a hard little rap flow to do. Josh pushed through and did a good job for his first time trying it. It reminded me how much I enjoy this specific song.

Nelly is probably my favorite newer hip hop rapper. I LOVE his flow and he is so smooth… I am not big on the hard core gangster rap. It just does not hit me, but this smooth rap is almost jazzy and leans more toward an R&B style…. I can really appreciate it.

Day 74 - Aerosmith - Angel

DAY 74
Aerosmith –“Angel”
From Permanent Vacation

All in all I think Aerosmith is one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Angel is one of my favorite tracks of theirs just because it is romantic and passionate. All we girls either from the "hair band" scene or who were right on the cusp of the hair band scene have a soft spot for power ballads.

This song does not quite fall under the power ballad criteria but it is so close it might as well.

Regardless it is awesome.

DAY 72
Concrete Blonde –“Walking In London”
From Walking in London

There are so many of Concrete Blonde’s songs that I love, but I am really feeling this one tonight.

Johnette Napolitano has such a rich and powerful voice. She is so amazing whether she is belting out the vocal or whispering in an almost sinister but romantic undertone.

The lyrical content of the songs Concrete Blonde performs are very unique and intriguing as well. Not your normal radio friendly bunch, but staggeringly talented none the less.

Day 71 - Kenny Chesney - Don't Happen Twice

DAY 71
Kenny Chesney –“Don’t Happen Twice”
From Kenny Chesney Greatest Hits

Yes, there is a little teeny bit of country passion in these bones. I am VERY selective on my country music picks, but this song by Kenny Chesney is definitely one of my all time favs. I heard it on CMT and it hooked me right away.

It is just fun and kicky. I really like the little guitar riffs and the slide on the steel guitar is really cool too.

Another nostalgic song. One that reminds me of the fun in being young and wild. :)

Day 70 - Goodness - Sincerely Yours

DAY 70
Goodness –“Sincerely Yours”
From Goodness

I fell in love with the band Goodness at an Alanis Morissette concert in 1996

They were opening on the tiny stage at The Gorge in George, Washington. It was a very memorable concert for many reasons, but I remember just being blown away! I truly enjoyed Goodness and the vocal charm and power of Ms. Carrie Akre.

The entire band was extremely talented but Carrie set them on fire! With a style all her own and a stage presence that rivals legends such as Anne Wilson, (who is a Goddess in my opinion.)

I could not find my beloved choice for today “Sincerely Yours”, but here is a link to the song “Wicked Eye” which appears on the same album.

I highly recommend the entire album to any music lover. No music collection is complete without it, it is excellent from front to back!

Day 69 - Bif Naked - I Died

DAY 69
Bif Naked –“I Died”
From I Bificus

I had to pick a bad ass for # 69 cuz that is such a hot and dirty number. *LOL*

So Bif Naked, I think, is so awesome and a totally hot female. Seriously.

She is fearless, she is covered in tattoos, she has the goth/skater chick/bad ass rocker thing going and she makes it work.

She may not be considered an amazing vocalist by some, but she really does have a very strong, powerful, and unique voice. I have practically worn out my CD copy of this album. I absolutely love it.

The first time I heard this song I thought, “Man, what an awesome song to kick off an album!” I really don’t think she could have opened this album up with a better track.

The lyrics are so seriously cool I just have to post them. They are so different.

Just enough rock and punk to toast my bagel!! :)

2:30 pm, I jumped off the welfare wagon
to meet you for lunch. You sit like a Thai princess:
Cold and captivating. You divulge your latest secret.
(So sinister - I cannot repeat)

From my eyes flows glacier water.
From my soul, sick obscenities.

I died eating french fries
In the restaurant on the corner,
Where you broke me heart.
I cried 'cause I bit my tongue
Knowing the truth would wash over you
Like a rash.

Annihilation of my self-respect and cash flow
Before my eyes - right here in this booth.
Through this blinding hatred I see a lady on my right.
She winked at me and said, "Run for your life!"

From my eyes flows glacier water.
From my soul, sick obscenities.

I died eating french fries
In the restaurant on the corner,
Where you broke me heart.
I cried 'cause I bit my tongue
Knowing the truth would wash over you
Like a rash.

I hereby use my glacier water
To wash away the remorse and the stain.
Behind these eyes I’m my mother's daughter.
Hard, hidden shame:
And you'll never see me again!

Day 67 - The Corrs featuring Bono - When The Stars Go Blue

DAY 67
The Corrs featuring Bono– “When The Stars Go Blue”
From Live In Dublin

Though I have mixed feelings about the original song writer, (Ryan Adams, certainly not to be mistaken for BRIAN Adams who bestowed our ears with the likes of “Summer of ’69” and “Everything I Do”), I have no mixed emotions about this version of this song.

This song is magnificent. ESPECIALLY with Bono’s very strong and clear vocals adding support.

It is beautiful and romantic. Though Tim McGraw recently covered this song and obviously has received more air play on the radio with his rendition, there is a certain magic that is added when it is sung between a man and a woman. Maybe it is more relatable, I don’t know exactly.

When I listen to the song not only does the music completely grab my attention but the lyrics make me pause for thought as well… ”Where do you go when you’re lonely, where do you go when you’re blue, where do you go when you’re lonely, I’ll follow you… when the stars go blue…”

Very nice.

DAY 64
Lenny Kravitz– “Black Girl”
From Are You Gonna Go My Way

Black Girl by Lenny Kravitz is such a soulful and beautiful song.

This song has such an older style groove to it.

There is one part of the song that Glenn always looks at me because I always have to snap my fingers at that one point in the song. Every time. It is tradition.

The lyrics depict a love song and an appreciation for black women in general.

The way Lenny writes about them is so poetic and dignified. It is really a piece of art and a tribute more than just a song.

Day 63 - Ellis Paul - Don't Breathe

DAY 63
Ellis Paul – “Don’t Breathe”
From Stories

This is definitely one of my favorite Ellis Paul tracks. It is such an intimate and sweet song.

My favorite lyrics in the song are:

Did I tell you then?
These are moments whole lifetimes are built on.

You're my best friend --
and now we're skin to skin
only sweat runs between us.
Don't breathe out loud...
Don't breathe out loud...
Don't breathe...

It is such a deep and passionate song, one that takes me back… it makes me reflect on my “1st time”, not that that may always be a good memory exactly, but being curious and naive... it reminds me of the innocence of our youth...

Why are we all in such a hurry to grow up?

Day 61 - The Meat Puppets - Station

DAY 61
The Meat Puppets – “Station”
From Too High To Die

This is a song I used to listen to on a daily basis. I bought this CD rather randomly. I had never heard The Meat Puppets, but I liked the CD cover art. *LOL* I did that a lot as a teenager. I lived in the country and the nearest place that sold CD’s was an hour away, (outside of Rusty’s Records, which was about 20 minutes away, but sadly his shop was not long for our area), so I became a Columbia House and BMG Music addict. I ordered so many of my CD’s through those mail away offers it was ridiculous.

But I discovered a lot of cool music that way.

“Station” was definitely my favorite track off of this album. It is purely silly, and another one of those songs that is perfect because of the imperfections. The arrangement is so creative and totally unique. I had never heard anything like it. I have heard few songs I could even compare it to even now.

DAY 60
KLF featuring Tammy Wynette – “Justified and Ancient”
From Single release featuring Tammy Wynette, but originally from the album The White Room

A lot of people think I am a freak for loving this song, and they are probably right, but I probably don’t care. *LOL*

I CAN NOT HELP myself; I HAVE to move to this song. Glenn could tell you. Whenever this song comes on I go into instant happy mode and HAVE to dance!

In the car, in the shower, while cooking, it does not matter. I am addicted to this song. I hear that beat kick in and it owns me. Flat out.

I remember when this song was released and it was rather ground breaking at the time for a country artist like Tammy Wynette to collaborate with a hip hop kind of group. I thought that was awesome! (Still do.) I love it when people get outside of “the box” and do things that are unexpected.

Day 59 - Don McLean - Vincent (Starry Starry Night)

DAY 59
Don McLean – “Vincent (Starry Starry Night”
From American Pie

Back to a more mellow choice today.

I have been in love with this song since I was a young child before I even knew who Vincent Van Gogh was, or really before I knew who Don McLean was.

This song was written in 1971. Don wrote it after reading a book about the life of Vincent Van Gogh. The Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam even played the song daily after the song had been released and a copy of the sheet music, together with a set of Van Gogh's paint brushes, is buried in a time capsule beneath the museum. (According to the official Don McLean website.)

The lyrics to this song are exquisite in every way, and the soft passion that Don sings the words just pierces your heart. I have cried many times when I truly listen to this song because the descriptions just draw you in.

One of the greatest songs of all time written about one of the greatest artists of all time.

From The Soul Sessions

The first time I heard Joss Stone do this White Stripes cover I almost did not recognize the song. Her version is so soulful and funky. I love the original too, but I really enjoy the spin she puts on it.

She was so young when she recorded this album and the power and range she has vocally are really stunning.

Another oldie but a goodie! ELO! And "Sweet Talkin' Woman" is most assuredly one of my favs.

I am a big time fan of Jeff Lynne. His production style and creativity are seriously unmatched in my opinion. The fact that he has not been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame is a tragedy and a gigantic oversight.

This is my favorite Boston album and "Rock & Roll Band" is just a great song. It grooves, it is fun, and you can dance to it.

Boston is a band that always had a pop edge but enough rock to still be cool.

Real men (& woman) listen to Boston! :)

Day 55 - Mama Cass (Elliot) - Make Your Own Kind of Music

DAY 55
Mama Cass (Elliot) – “Make Your Own Kind of Music”
From Make Your Own Kind of Music

Mama Cass. What an amazing woman.

Cass is probably one of the most influential ladies in music history, in my opinion. Not only was she more talented than just about any other female singer I can think of, but this lady had confidence, charm, and all the ingredients of a star.

Regardless of any challenges she may have faced with her physical appearance, Mama Cass MADE people listen because she was just THAT talented, she was so damn good people did not care, she had a great voice and she was a great performer.

There are so many of her songs that are my favorites, but this one is definitely my #1. The lyrics are so hopeful for those of us who have dreamed of making it big in “the business. When I hear it I am so inspired to press on and continue to try and live my dreams. I think, “Cass made it, and she is encouraging us all to keep trying even though she has passed away…” Seems silly but it still rings true for me even today.

“Nobody can tell ya
There's only one song worth singing
They may try and sell ya
Cause it hangs them up
To see someone like you

You gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind music
Even if nobody else sings along”

Those are powerful lyrics. What a gal.

Day 54 - Sublime - Seed

DAY 54
Sublime– “Seed”
From Sublime

This is probably my personal favorite song by Sublime. "Seed" is just so energetic and fun!

There is that familiar main staple of a reggae undertone with just a touch of punk. This is a song I HAVE to dance around to whenever it comes on.

Sure, it is a tiny bit graphic, but I am all about allowing the artist full creative freedom. And it works for this song in a big way.
