Day 136 - Testament - Trail of Tears

DAY 136
Testament – "Trail of Tears”
From "Low"

This song almost sounds out of place among the heavy metal guitars and thrashing going on in the accompanying tracks found on this album.

"Trail of Tears" is a very deep and almost sorrowful sounding song. It has an excellent story, still some pretty killer guitar riff's, and keeps your attention.

I could not find a clip of the band performing this song but it was used as the backing music on this fan made video on YouTube. Check it out!

Day 135 - Dolly Parton - I Will Always Love You

DAY 135
Dolly Parton – "I Will Always Love You”
From "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas - Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack"

This was one of my Mom's favorite songs when I was little. She really loves Dolly's music. My Mom would sing to this song and it brings back great memories.

I enjoy Dolly's original version of this song far more than any remakes or covers. It depicts raw, human, vulnerable emotion. It is just a genuine performance of words that really meant something to her and words that people can really relate to.

Dolly may have certain parts of her public persona that are a joke, but her song writing ability is certainly not one of them.

Day 133 - The Humblebums - Keep it to Yourself

DAY 133
The Humblebums – "Keep it to Yourself”
From "Please Sing a Song For Us... The Transatlantic Anthology"

Happy Birthday, Roymond! Roymond can be added to the list of people that are crazy enough to pick 10,000 favorite songs, and talk about them in a blog.

Glenn is excited about this Humblebums CD that arrived today. I'm happy about it too, because I like a lot of the songs also.

"Keep it to Yourself" has got to be my favorite of the bunch. The chorus is very catchy.

My mind tells me what to do
Keep it to yourself
Tell nobody else
Just how you loved her so
They don't want to know
Keep it to yourself

Also, thank you Andy! Andy started listing his choices by album title, and Glenn liked the idea so he starting doing it, and now I am too!

Day 132 - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California

DAY 132
Red Hot Chili Peppers – "Dani California”
From "Stadium Arcadium"

So I ordered the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album, Stadium Arcadium, and it is awesome! Not only is it a double CD so it is WAY worth it, but both discs are really good. (In my opinion.)

Dani California was the first song I heard on the album and it really blew me away. I just love how the RHCP mix rock with a little hip hop and then throw together these great lyrics that really keep your attention.

The video they did for this song is just AWESOME as well. It cracks me up! I really "got it" the first time I saw it.

These guys are definitely one of my favorite bands of all time.

Day 131 - feist - One Evening

DAY 131
feist – "One Evening”
From "Let It Die"

I am of a mind that eventually I may pick every song from this album on my top 10,000... seriously this album is just THAT good.

Glenn and I were doing our usual Sunday stuff... breakfast, minor errands, cleaning house, etc. And while in the car we usually spin our, affectionately nick named, "split the difference" CD's of our top 10,000 picks thus far.

Glenn picked this song on his top 10,000 awhile back and every time it comes on I love to crank it up and sing with it. Glenn does a great job on the harmonies and I have learned to sing them decently well just by listening to him and the song.

Click here to see the video. It is kind of a funny little video. The song will likely impress you more than the visuals, but it is still worth a watch and a listen. ;)

Day 129 - Bread - Guitar Man

DAY 129
Bread – "Guitar Man”
From "Guitar Man"

Don't ask me where this choice came from, it literally just popped in my head and I was feeling the vibe. I seem to be swinging between mellow ballads and heavy rock tunes. Weird... anyways...

This song is just a gorgeous compilation. I identify with the lyrics, not so much through myself but through a lot of musicians I know.

I see some of these amazing men and women who play their instruments and find this place where they are untouchable. They get so involved with a song through their instrument, you almost feel like you are watching something very private. Almost as if you should look away because you are intruding on a tender moment.

I love watching musicians who are so "one" with their musical instrument that you can envision them being a whole being. Their blood running through the instrument like it would in their veins. I have been lucky to know a few musicians THAT amazing. This song kind of describes "that" musician to me.

Here is an awesome live performance of Bread performing Guitar Man on YouTube.

The lyrics are so incredible, I have to post them, just cuz I want to and if you take the time to read them you will understand my frame of mind on this one.

Who draws the crowd and plays so loud, baby it's the guitar man
Who's gonna steal the show, you know baby it's the guitar man
He can make you love, he can make you cry
He will bring you down then he'll get you high
Somethin' keeps him goin' miles and miles a day
To find another place to play.
Night after night who treats you right, baby it's the guitar man
Who's on the radio, you go listen to the guitar man
Then he comes to town and you see his face
And you think you might like to take his place
Somethin' keeps him driftin' miles and miles away
Searchin' for the songs to play.

Then you listen to the music and you like to stay along
You want to get the meaning out of each and every song
Then you find yourself a message and some words
To call your own and take them home.

He can make you love, he can get you high
He will bring you down then he'll make you cry
Somethin' keeps him movin' but no one seems to know
What it is that makes him go.

Then the lights begin to flicker and the sound is getting dim
The voice begins to falter and the crowds are getting thin
But he never seems to notice he's just got to find
Another place to play, Anyway Got to play, anyway Got to play.

Day 128 - The Humblebums - Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway

DAY 128
The Humblebums – "Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway”
From "The New Humblebums"

This is a very pretty song. Glenn did a cover version of the song in 2004 that you can listen to by clicking here. Our friend Jack did the percussion and backup vocals.

Glenn found a really good deal tonight on a Humblebums 2-CD retrospective on Amazon.com. The Humblebums was Gerry Rafferty's band before Stealer's Wheel, and his successful solo career. The Humblebums have a lot of good songs, but this is one of my favorites.

DAY 127
Rob Zombie (featuring Lionel Richie & Trina) – "Brick House 2003”
From "Past, Present & Future"

Lionel Richie became very kick ass to me as soon as I heard him doing this song he originally did with The Commodores, with none other than Mr. Rob Zombie, a rock god!!!!

This rendition is amazing. It hits hard, has an awesome groove, contains some sweet chunky guitar riffs... it is just sexy and hot!

Day 126 - Billy Joel - She's Always A Woman

DAY 126
Billy Joel – "She's Always A Woman”
From "The Stranger"

Billy Joel is one of those artists I always liked a lot, but I grew a TRUE appreciation for his music when Glenn and I first began seeing each other as at that time Billy Joel was, and to a great extent still is, one the most influential musical artists on Glenn's songwriting.

This song is romantic, heart felt, well written, genuine, the whole package.

I have a fondness for Billy's voice. Again, it is just very natural and honest.

I like this YouTube clip of Billy singing "She's Always A Woman". It shows how much people love his music, and even as he has grown older he still sounds very very good. :)

Day 125 - Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy

DAY 125
Gin Blossoms – "Hey Jealousy”
From "New Miserable Experience"

So I hit the big 125 today! Woot!

This song is not one that I would describe as mind-blowingly significant or anything... this is just a song I really like. I enjoyed it very much in my teen years... I purchased it in my BMG Music mail order addictive era. *LOL* What is a a girl living in a rural area to do? No stores to shop for CD's at within a 30 mile radius, so mail order was the best choice. :)

This song is sorta a fun poppy little tune. The lead vocalist has such an awesome clean voice. Even in their live performances he sounds really awesome.

Day 124 - The Pretenders - I'll Stand By You

DAY 124
The Pretenders – "I'll Stand By You”
From "Last of the Independents"

I missed another day yesterday... ahhh, well.. it happens. I was out of town visiting family and time got away from me... the usual... well time and a dial up connection that was not cooperating. ;) *LOL*

So I am choosing this sweet and romantic song by The Pretenders. The song is lovely as is the video. It is older but still such an amazing song.

The lyrics are very intimate. It is easy to imagine the inspiration that must have accompanied these thoughts when the song was created, (for me it is anyway.) :)

Ah... sweet love...

Day 123 - Ellis Paul - She Loves A Girl

DAY 123
Ellis Paul – "She Loves A Girl”
From "Translucent Soul"

This song is on the first album I ever heard of Ellis Paul. It has a very deep story line.

My favorite lyric is:

You took your parents' religion
And you drank it down like a coke
It helped to quench your confusion
Now look who's heart that it broke

Those lyrics really made me think. Not so much about the subject of the story in the song, but it made me think about what I really think and what I think because I was taught to think that way. Craziness.

The song talks about a lesbian relationship that is not okay with the family, which in truth may offend or even disgust some people, but I see it differently. I think the moral of the song is doing what you believe in your heart is the right thing for yourself and having the courage to pursue it.

Ellis Paul, always the amazing story teller. My hero.

Day 122 - Deanna Carter - We Danced Anyway

DAY 122
Deanna Carter – "We Danced Anyway”
From "Did I Shave My Legs For This?"

I really had no clue what song felt like "me" today and so I started flipping through the CD collection and came across my Deanna Carter CD "Did I Shave My Legs For This?"

This song, "We Danced Anyway" is just a fun nostalgic tune. I am a sucker for these young love and remembering the good times songs. :P I am goofy that way...

You can dance to this song and just have fun. It is not an intricate song lyrically, but that is the beauty of the song. It is simple and you can wrap your mind around it so easily.

Deanna's voice reminds me a little of Ms. Tammy Wynette. Not too shabby at all. :)

Day 121 - Pantera - This Love

DAY 121
Pantera – "This Love”
From "Vulgar Display of Power"

This song is just one of those severe rock ballads that tricks you into thinking it is a mellow tune... all mushy gushy with heartbreak and love... and then it rips your guts out and kicks your ass with the heavy guitars and scream/singing when the chorus kicks in.

The lyrics that really grab me in the song are:

I'd been the tempting one
Stole her from herself
This gift in pain
Her pain was life
And sometimes I feel so sorry
I regret this the hurting of you
But you make me so unhappy
I'd take my life and leave love with you

I'd kill myself for you, I'd kill you for myself -

VERY intense. But a lot of us do get to that almost unhealthy place with certain relationships so it is still very relatable to some.

Either way this song is awesome and I love it!!!! The video is pretty cool too.

Day 120 - Jackson Browne - Sky Blue and Black

DAY 120
Jackson Browne – "Sky Blue and Black”
From "I'm Alive"

I don't know the story behind this song, all I know is it is seems very romantic, very genuine, and deep. It almost sounds like a love song but as the song progresses you can almost hear it being sung to a lost love.... perhaps someone who passed away....

(Jackson Browne describes the songs in his own words in this YouTube clip. Click here to see it and listen to it. It is a beautiful description and you can sample the song at the same time.)

So the song is well written in my opinion. It is human and you can connect to it.

A funny story is I had never really listened to a lot of Jackson Browne except for songs I heard on the radio growing up, however, I had started getting into buying CD's from Columbia House and BMG Music and I saw the front cover and I thought Jackson Browne looked really hot and attractive and so I bought the CD. Never having heard any of the songs on that album... I just liked the cover... *LOL* Turned out to be one of my favorite CD's.

I can put this CD in and listen to it front to back. I love when an album does that for me. :)

Day 119 - The Beatles - Happiness Is A Warm Gun

DAY 119
The Beatles – "Happiness Is A Warm Gun”
From "The White Album"

This Beatles track is most certainly one of my ultimate all time favorites. I adore The White Album as a whole, but for me this track really stands out.

It starts out so mellow and thoughtful and as it starts picking up momentum you just become more intrigued with the story, and then the electric guitar kicks in and just blows your mind! The transitions in this song are just fantastic. Any song that can go from a mellow acoustic vibe, to rock, to almost a motown-ish sound and hold it all together is very impressive.

The sexual undertones are pretty hot too. ;)

So though I have MANY favorites from The Beatles, this song would have to be in my top 5 by them.

I loved this song especially as a small child. I remember it being one of my Dad's favorites. I really loved the album cover when I was little too. I thought it was so funny with the cartoon character depictions.

This song tells such a lively story. It is poppy and bubble gum, but at the same time the story is so vivid and entertaining.

Day 114 - Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark

DAY 114
Death Cab For Cutie – "I Will Follow You Into The Dark”
From "Plans"

I truly believe this band is one of the most talented and diverse of the "newer" bands I have heard. They can rock and write a good mellow tune as well.

This song is so beautiful and deep. I fell in love with it instantly and it completely suites my vibe tonight.

I had a rough day back at work... and I have felt unfortunately lost in thought about life, the universe, and everything. (I had to steal that phrase from Douglas Adams... but it is the best description I can think of at the moment.)

The lyrics to this song appear to describe a person contemplating life and death... love and sorrow... they kind of reach out to those of us who have so many questions about the purpose of life, death, and what is beyond this world. The what's and why's of day to day life.

So without getting too personal, this song is beautifully written, the vocals are soft and flawless, and I really enjoy the video as well. It is very artistic and thought provoking.

This is just an all around enjoyable acoustic song.

Day 113 - White Lion - Blue Monday

DAY 113
White Lion – "Blue Monday”
From "Mane Attraction"

This is a rarity for me. I am choosing an instrumental song.

This song, "Blue Monday" by White Lion is such a gorgeous piece of work. I love the electric guitar parts where it really does sound like the guitar is not just weeping but wailing and even screaming sometimes.

The saddness that they portray through their musical instruments alone is mind blowing on this specific track.

A lot of people kind of brush White Lion off as just another hair band, (which admittedly, I love the hair bands, I can never deny that), however, they were very accomplished musicians with enormous amounts of depth.

Sadly I could not find a YouTube clip featuring this song, but if you poke around I am sure you can find it to at least listen to, and if you like electric guitar ballads I think this song might be right up your alley too.

Day 112 - Ellis Paul - Goodbye Hollywood

DAY 112
Ellis Paul – "Goodbye Hollywood”
From "American Jukebox Fables"

(I am editing this post just a tad bit as Glenn and I made a trip to Reno and had MAJOR internet problems so all we could literally get to was getting the song picked in the title of the post. This is also why I did not pick a song last Saturday because we could not get online at all. So frustrating. So now that we are home things are getting back to normal.)

I chose this song as we were in Reno at the time and the rhinestone suite line came into my head and it seemed appropriate.

This is the part of the chorus that came to mind:

You said, "Let's pack our boots,
our rhinestone suits and
take a walk on the wire
feel the weight of the truth
Sometimes, you gotta tear
the big top down, down
I gave the town all that I could
Say goodbye to Hollywood"

Even though the song may not be necessarily geared for the Reno/Las Vegas area it still seems fitting.

Ellis Paul is such an amazing lyricist. Even reading back on the lyrics to this song I am reminded of his greatness. Check out the official Ellis Paul website for the rest of these lyrics and many more. If you love a good story or love poetry you will not be disappointed. ;)

This is one of my fav Liam songs because it is so much fun.
