Day 289 - Stevie Wonder - If You Really Love Me

DAY 289
Stevie Wonder – "If You Really Love Me”
From "Where I'm Coming From"

Glenn and I were listening to this song on the oldies station on our way to the grocery store and I immediately starting bopping about to it and realized that this is definitely one of my favorite Stevie Wonder tracks.

Glenn and I briefly discussed how this song has a different vibe than some of Stevie's other creations, but it still maintains the fun beat and arrangement that can usually be found in the majority of Mr. Wonder's hits.

I love the fast parts of this song but the parts where it slows way down add a nice variety for your listening enjoyment.

Even though the sound quality is lacking a bit I still love this YouTube clip of Stevie singing this song. You can really tell he loves what he does.

Day 288 - The Beatles - Two of Us

DAY 288
The Beatles – "Two of Us”
From "Let It Be"

This is one of so many wonderful Beatles songs.

Glenn and I have been trying to learn to perform this song, but the harmonies are challenging. I like that though. Whatever helps me get better at what I enjoy doing!

This songs incorporates a few nice changes that are somewhat unexpected which really make the song amazing. You can hear a lot of Paul's influence on this song. At least i think so...

This is a cool studio session of this song on this YouTube clip, so... check it out! :)

Day 287 - Ingrid Michaelson – Keep Breathing

DAY 287
Ingrid Michaelson – "Keep Breathing”
From "Grey's Anatomy, Vol. 3, Original TV Soundtrack"

So this song has been running laps in my head all day and the more I hear of Ingrid the more I like her! I looked for her album at Best Buy tonight but they did not have it... bastards. :P

Anyway, this song is so beautiful and powerful. The lyrics, again, are arranged in such a way that they are simple but they make such an impact! The strings are an especially nice touch.

These lyrics are almost a mantra. As I sing my guts out to this song I can feel tears well up in my eyes because these simple words really move me as I relate to them so much. All of us can really. Life is so hard and ultimately all WE CAN do is keep breathing no matter how hard life gets.

I am going to post these lyrics as well as the YouTube clip featuring the song and I will hope, if this is a new music discovery for you, you will listen to this song intently with your eyes closed and feel the emotion. It is beautiful.

The storm is coming but I don't mind.
People are dying, I close my blinds.
All that I know is I'm breathing now.

I want to change the world - Instead I sleep.
I want to believe in more than you and me.
But all that I know is I'm breathing.
All I can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing
Now I, Now I
Now I, Now..., Now...

All that I know is I'm breathing.
All I can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing.

All we can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing...
Now.

Day 286 - Ingrid Michaelson - Way I Am

DAY 286
Ingrid Michaelson – "Way I Am”
From "Girls & Boys "

This is lame but I just had to find out who did this song due to hearing a clip of it used on an Old Navy commercial... Hahahahaha

And I instantly fell in love with the simplicity of the words and the music arrangement. Admittedly I know nothing about Ingrid, but I plan to in the very near future....

Apparently this song was also used on an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" as well. You can hear the song matched up to scenes from that show on this YouTube clip.

Here is a cool live performance of Ingrid performing the song as well. She sounds very good live. I likes!!!!

She reminds me of Lisa Loeb... in a way...

CUTE lyrics!

If you were falling, then I would catch you.
You need a light, I'd find a match.

Cuz I love the way you say good morning.
And you take me the way I am.

If you are chilly, here take my sweater.
Your head is aching, I'll make it better.

Cuz I love the way you call me baby.
And you take me the way I am.

I'd buy you Rogaine if you start losing all your hair.
Sew on patches to all you tear.

Cuz I love you more than I could ever promise.
And you take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.

Day 285 - Maurice Williams And The Zodiacs - Stay

DAY 285
Maurice Williams And The Zodiacs – "Stay”
From "Dirty Dancing: Original Soundtrack "

I was listening to this song on the oldies station here in Spokane on the way home from work and have not been able to shake the vibe of the song all evening. I truly love this song.

This song was originally released as a single in 1960, (written though in 1953 for Maurice William's girlfriend by Mr. Williams), but I discovered it back in 1987 when the movie "Dirty Dancing" was released.

My Dad was SO not crazy about his kids watching this movie at the ages we were at the time, but you know how that goes... The folks try their hardest to keep their kids from questionable content but we always find a way to watch it, hear it, see it, etc... In truth the sex stuff never really seemed out of place or extreme to me even at age 10. (My Mom was very open with us about the facts of life so nakedness, sex, the human form in general was never considered nasty, ugly, taboo, or dirty... it was always just another part of life.... anyway, back to business.)

This IS a sexy little song. Short. But sexy! I heard a little factoid about the song when it was finished on the radio too which was that it is, (arguably), the shortest song on the billboard charts to ever hit #1... (I have not researched that but... whatever...)

So here is the original recording which sounds fabulous! But here is a fun little video of Maurice Williams And The Zodiacs performing the song LIVE in a much more recent setting. ;)

Day 284 - Coldplay - Amsterdam

DAY 284
Coldplay – "Amsterdam”
From "A Rush of Blood to the Head"

So I just couldn't pick a song yesterday... I received some really awful news that has been weighing on my mind since yesterday afternoon... one of my friends committed suicide on Sunday.

I have had this happen within my family/friend circle before, but it is never easy to digest.

Just seeing my now deceased friend's wife come in and tell me that the love of her life is dead and by his own hands... it is just such a foreign concept. Not that I do not understand feelings and thoughts of suicide, I think all of us have entertained the thought of suicide at one time or another, just not as seriously as some people do.

A lot of people say it is a cowards way out, that it is selfish.... I don't necessarily believe that. I think a lot of the time people's minds become twisted and they get to this weird place where they just can't make a reasonable decision about things and they find suicide to be the best option as to not hurt those around them any more. Which to a reasonable mind seems crazy, because we love these people, flaws and all and it kills us to lose them. There is just no reason to the situation at all.

So this song is beautiful. It generates gentle and severe emotion. And it fits my mood and my thoughts tonight. (You can hear it and watch the video here if you like.)

So here is to my friend. I hope he has peace now...

Come on, my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
If i, if I’d only waited
I’d not be stuck here in this hole
Come here my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
And I swear I waited and waited
I’ve got to get out of this hole

But time is on your side
Its on your side now
Not pushing you down and all around
It’s no cause for concern

Come on, oh my star is fading
And I see no chance of release
And I know I’m dead on the surface
But I am screaming underneath

And time is on your side
Its on your side now
Not pushing you down
And all around, no
It’s no cause for concern

Stuck on the end of this ball and chain
And I’m on my way back down again
Stood on a bridge, tied to the noose
Sick to the stomach
You can say what you mean
But it won’t change a thing
I’m sick of the secrets
Stood on the edge, tied to a noose
You came along and you cut me loose
You came along and you cut me loose
You came along and you cut me loose.

Day 283 - Jim Croce - Operator

DAY 283
Jim Croce – "Operator”
From "You Don't Mess Around with Jim"

My dad initially introduced me to this song as a child. It was one of his favorites and became one of mine as well. There is no question that Jim Croce was a master song writer. He had an amazing talent that touched the world so intensely during his short time here on Earth.

"Operator" is so vivid. The lyrics bring the visuals to your mind with ease...

The band my hubby is in, The Halfracks, performed a version of this song for the first time the other night that was so much fun and was so different but still rang true to the original. It is such a great song. (They mixed it with their original song "Michelle" and then it blends into "Operator", it is so fun!)

Check out Jim singing "Operator" in this YouTube clip. (I really enjoy this stripped down version. Acoustics performances are so awesome.)

Day 282 - Rob Zombie - Never Gonna Stop

DAY 282
Rob Zombie – "Never Gonna Stop”
From "The Sinister Urge"

This song fits my mood right now. That and I am REALLY excited as we just bought tickets to go SEE Rob Zombie when he comes to Spokane in November!

I am SOOOOOOOO excited as I am a HUGE Rob Zombie fan from WAAAAAAAAAY back.

This song has an awesome groove... LOVE the bass line... Any song that incorporates the lyrics "Ride a dinosaur" is frickin' awesome in my book... especially when it is accompanied by hard core guitar riffs... nice and crunchy, just the way I like it... :P

Day 281 - Tin Tin - Toast and Marmalade for Tea

DAY 281
Tin Tin – "Toast and Marmalade for Tea”
From Tin Tin"

Glenn here. Rachael's on her way home from work as I type this, and we have limited time before we have to be somewhere, so she asked me to do the typing.

Her choice today is "Toast and Marmalade for Tea" by Tin Tin. It was released in 1970, and as it turns out, it was produced by Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. Rach likes the trippy guitar sounds in the song.

There isnt a video available for "Toast and Marmalade for Tea", but you can check out the music video for Tin Tin's second single entitled "Is That the Way?"

Day 280 - The Raspberries - Go All The Way

DAY 280
The Raspberries – "Go All The Way”
From "Raspberries"

This is one sexy little song, especially for the era it was released in. It could almost be considered scandalous really...

This is one of my favorite songs from my childhood. My day had a 45 of this song that we kids just about wore out. We loved it so much...

So the guys look a little dorky nowadays, but back then they were some hip cats! *LOL* :P This performance/video is pretty cute... But I REALLY like this LIVE performance a lot! This performance starts with "Go All The Way" and transitions into "I Wanna Be With You."

Check out these lyrics... for the early 1970's this was pretty hot... ;)

"I never knew how complete love could be
Till she kissed me and said
Baby, please, go all the way
It feels so right
Being with you here tonight
Please, go all the way
Just hold me close
Don't ever let me go

I couldn't say what I wanted to say
Till she whispered, I love you
So, please, go all the way
It feels so right
Being with you here tonight
Please, go all the way
Just hold me close
Don't ever let me go

[Instrumental Interlude]

Before her love
I was cruel and mean
I had a hole in the place
Where my heart should have been
But now I've changed
And it feels so strange
I come alive when she does
All those things to me
And she says

(Come on), come on
(Come on)
(Come on), come on
(Come on)
I need you (come on)
I love you (come on)
I need you (come on)
(Come on)

Please, go all the way
It feels so right
Being with you here tonight
Please, go all the way
Just hold me close
Don't ever let me go, oh, no"

Day 279 - Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok

DAY 279
Murray Head – "One Night In Bangkok”
From "Chess [CAST RECORDING] "

This is a song I would love to cover one day! I adore the arrangement, I adore the very intelligent lyrics, it is just an amazing composition. The beat really grabs you as does the instrumentation.

I love these two lyrics the best:

"I get my kicks above the waistline sunshine..."

"I don't see you guys rating
The kind of mate I'm contemplating
I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you..."

CLASSIC!

DAY 278
Britney Spears – "Lucky”
From "Oops!... I Did It Again"

So, I had no clue I was ever in my lifetime going to pick a song by Britney, but I have to say I do enjoy this song. A guilty pleasure if you will...

This song reminds me of the old classics a little.... it is obviously patterned after the likes of The Supremes, The Ronettes, Little Peggy March, etc...

Day 277 - Glenn and Rachael - Need Stilts

DAY 277
Glenn and Rachael – "Need Stilts”

Glenn and I wrote this song for a SongFight challenge. The title was "Need Stilts" and we thought it was a very challenging title so we decided to go for it... Oddly enough I was immediately inspired by different Lemonheads tracks I liked and the creativity brewed from there...

We did not tell any of our friends that we had entered this songfight and we ended up winning that week by a pretty big margin. This song is kind of our claim to song fight fame so to speak. We had a great time writing it and it has been a crowd favorite ever since. It is just cute and fun...

Today is the 12th anniversary of the day I met Glenn... hard to believe it has been that long... it is a good thing.. ;)

DAY 276
Belinda Carlisle – "Leave A Light On For Me”
From "Runaway Horses"

I loved this song back in the day when it first came out and it just hit me right tonight.

Belinda Carlisle has such a unique voice and style. Even though a lot of her songs are poppy they are usually well written and have lyrics that you can relate to and enjoy.

This song is sweet and romantic. It fits my mood today even though I feel a little sick today...

DAY 275
Cristopher Lucas – "5th Grade Lover”
From "Cruxlife"

Cris is such an awesome guy. And I am proud to say he is a friend of Glenn and I.

He has been a local talent for a long time and is well respected in our community as a musician.

This song, "5th Grade Lover", is just extremely well written, very fun, and gives you plenty to relate to. When Cris sings it in a live setting the song almost literally springs to life through his charisma and just the expressions on his face...

You can check out a sample of this song on CD Baby.

If you enjoy amazing adult contemporary music with a little funk, a little pop, a little folk, etc. the album "Cruxlife" is a must have for your music collection.

Day 274 - Guns N' Roses - Patience

DAY 274
Guns N' Roses – "Patience”
From "G N' R Lies"

This "power ballad" I feel has a little more substance than a lot of the "hair band" ballads of that era.

G N' R was never really lumped into the hair band stereo type because they really refused to compromise or be really "pretty." They were more likely to be lumped in with the likes of Metallica, so they never became really "uncool" to like.

Nowadays I don't see the real substance in their works... it seems like a few of the members have just lost their genuine edge... but back in their hay day they were real monsters of the rock world with bragging rights because they rocked harder than just about any band and were one of the most talented bands around.

"Patience" is just a nice groovable, mellow, tune and was always a nice change up when listening to this album.

Day 273 - Samantha Fox - Walking On Air

DAY 273
Samantha Fox – "Walking On Air”
From "I Wanna Have Some Fun"

Ok, ok, ok, I know I gotta plead insanity for picking a Samantha Fox song and all the "indie" cred I had going for me is out the window, but what the heck.... ya know.... ya like what ya like...

I actually bought this album on cassette when it was a brand new release in 1989 or 1990... can't remember for sure.... so I was a youngin' either way. I bought the cassette for the cover Samantha did of "I Only Wanna Be With You." But this song, "Walking On Air" was my favorite track by far.

It had a fun poppy beat which I was really into at the time.... So there ya go.... I am not too proud to hang it all out there... neither was Samantha at one point in time, but that is a hella different story... Hahaha... :P

So I was not sure what to pick today, and I am sorta tired so I am going with my first instinct. And having picked "Sunshine" the other day I felt like picking "Teenage Dirt Bag" today.

This is just a hilariously fun song, it is absolutely fantastic to rock out to, and it is so cool. :) How is that for a description.... Lame, I know, but I am tired, so whatever... :P

DAY 271
Aimee Mann – "That's Just What You Are”
From "Melrose Place - Soundtrack"

We bought Metroid Prime 3 for Glenn yesterday, and he picked up this soundtrack as an impulse purchase on the way to the registers. He didn't even really stop. He just saw the album cover and the price, grabbed it, and I asked him what it was.

He bought it for the Paul Westerberg song, but this Aimee Mann song was a pleasant bonus, and it even kicks off the soundtrack. I immediately loved this one.

DAY 270
Wheatus – "Sunshine”
From "Wheatus"

This song was a pleasant surprise when we purchased this CD. The lyrics of fun and creative and crude. I love it! The musical arrangement is super fun as well... The fun little guitar riffs really make the song.

This band was better known for the song "Teenage Dirt Bag" which was the song that prompted us to buy the album. (GREAT song.)

Day 269 - The Doors - Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)

DAY 269
The Doors – "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)”
From "The Doors"

Glenn and I were briefly discussing The Doors yesterday and I remember this song very fondly. It is one of my all time favorite Doors tracks without a doubt. It is just so different from all their other recordings. Kinda a cutesy kind of song with a dark undertone.

I always liked The Doors and have been familiar with them all throughout my growing up years, however, I became rather obsessed with them when the movie "The Doors" came out. I nearly wore my VHS tape of the movie out. (Finally bought it on DVD a few years ago so I am covered.) Hahaha...

DAY 268
Gwen Stefani – "4 In The Morning”
From "The Sweet Escape"

I am really enjoying this Gwen album... I was not as fond of the one before this one, "Love. Angel. Music. Baby." But this one has drawn my attention.

The first time I heard this song I thought of how much it reminded me of the pop queens of my little girl days... Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Stacy Q, Martika....

The chorus is definitely the hook for me... I really enjoy the arrangement.

Patti Smith – "Because The Night”
From "Easter"

Patti Smith... one of the most fantastic poets and song writers of our time. This song is such an amazing example of her talent with words.

I love that her vocals are not "perfect", I love that she feels her songs in every fiber of her body. Which, to me, makes these songs most enjoyable when she is performing them. (Check out the video to enjoy the song, check out this live performance of Patti performing the same song years later exuding just as much magnificence.)

This woman is a punk rock legend because of her passion, diversity, intelligence, and charisma.... she is the full package with out coming in a "perfect" package.

Long live talent and genuine crazy passion for art and music.

Performers like Patti remind me of what needs to be preserved in rock n' roll.

Day 266 - Tracy Lawrence - I See It Now

DAY 266
Tracy Lawrence – "I See It Now”
From "I See It Now"

So the video to this song is a little dopey, but this has remained one of my favorite country songs even after all this time.

Something about the lyric, "I never saw, you dance with your feet off the ground." It is romantic even though it is a song about a lost love.

Day 265 - KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See

DAY 265
KT Tunstall – "Suddenly I See”
From "Eye To The Telescope"

Funny enough I had been thinking I already picked this song but Glenn reminded me I had not yet, so today is the day!

I was NOT fond of "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" AT ALL, so I almost did not give KT Tunstall a chance at all, but then "Suddenly I See" was released and it made me take a second look.

I really enjoy the beat to this song, and I also find the chorus especially hooky.

The video to this song caught my attention too.... I like the bright colors and different filming techniques used. I ran across this live performance and I kinda like the raspy edge to her vocal...

This is just a very fun track and I likes it! :)
