DAY 313
The Cast of Nightmare Before Christmas – "This is Halloween”
From "The Nightmare Before Christmas - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack"
(Spooky... I am picking a Halloween song on Halloween AND the song number is 313... WoooOOOOooooOOOOooo...) :P
I know, cliche and corny to pick a Halloween song on Halloween, however, we have been listening to a compilation CD of Halloween songs at my work all day and the disk leads off with this track. And since I have been in love with this movie and the music since it's inception, it is most definitely a favorite and appropriate for a top 10,000 choice.
I had the grand opportunity to see The Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D last Friday and it was awesome! For a veteran fan of the movie I could REALLY see and appreciate the magic of 3-D in this film. What a wonderful treat. It makes me feel like a little kid getting to enjoy their favorite cartoon all over again for the 1st time.
Danny Elfman is a genius composer. I truly admire his creativity and vision. I can almost always tell when he is involved in a project. Tim Burton as well for that matter. His creative genius almost screams through the visuals in any movie he has taken part in bringing to life.

Day 312 - War - Why Can't We Be Friends?
DAY 312
War – "Why Can't We Be Friends?”
From "Why Can't We Be Friends?"
This song just hits me in the right spot every time, and it all starts with the fun little keyboard riff right at the beginning. I adore the sing-a-long vibe throughout this track. It sounds like they are having a blast recording with each other.
I discovered this song when watching one of my all time favorite movies, "Dazed & Confused."
Hear the studio version on this YouTube clip. There is some great information on War in their wikipedia write up too that one might find interesting.

Day 311 - Queen - Who Wants To Live Forever
DAY 311
Queen – "Who Wants To Live Forever”
From "Classic Queen"
This song just felt right tonight. I love how dramatic and theatrical the sound of this track is, as only the fine Mr. Freddie Mercury could have done.
The orchestration of the music is so passionate and touching, the ways it begins so soft and slowly and builds to this explosive arrangement!
The first time I heard this song was on the movie "Highlander."

Day 310 - The Beatles - This Boy
DAY 310
The Beatles – "This Boy”
From "Past Masters, Vol. 1"
This song has been a favorite of mine since the moment I heard it. I actually was not introduced to this track until 1996 when I bought Glenn "The Beatles Anthology, Vol. 1."
The version of this song on "Anthology" was from a TV performance on The Morecambe & Wise show, which is a British program.
"This Boy" was originally released as the b-side to "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."
I tend to affectionately parody this song when my husband is being especially antagonistic. ;) We have fun with it.
I REALLY like this YouTube clip of The Beatles performing this song.

DAY 309
Sylvia – "Nobody”
From "Just Sylvia"
This song got stuck in my head today. I guess in a way I would consider it a guilty pleasure. My folks really loved this song and it brings back happy thoughts for me.
Even though it is a sort of depressing situation being described in the song, it has this oddly happy vibe to the music that does not bring you down.... very unique I think.

Day 307 - Genesis - That's All
DAY 307
Genesis – "That's All”
From "Genesis"
I was jamming to this song on the radio on the way home, (desperately trying to avoid Fergie whose song, "Big Girls Don't Cry", was being played on multiple stations and driving me nuts!!!!)
I love the beat right at the beginning where it draws you in and then it picks up a little and almost sounds happy ad then gets serious again. The love/hate relationship that is depicted is very relatable to all couples. There are times when we love each other so much but we get so frustrated with each other at the same time.
In all relationships there is the big BUT. As quoted in this song:
But I love you
more than I wanted to
there's no point in trying to pretend
there's been no-one who
makes me feel like you do
say we'll be together till the end
He describes being so "done" with this love interest but yet he wants her because she gives him what no one else has or can. Pretty intense really.
I really like the video too. It has some neat shots. Not too lame for 1983.

DAY 305
The Irish Rovers – "The Black Velvet band”
From "The Best Of The Irish Rovers"
We were listening to this song this morning in our pajamas and I could not help but dance to it. This is one of my favorite irish songs. The story is sweet and romantic and I love the harmonies. This song is just so much fun. The irish are so upbeat and happy! (Or so it seems when I listen to The Irish Rovers anyway!) :)

I love this song because it is such a BLAST to dance to! My hubby's and my friends Monte and Doug used to play this song all the time when we would go to see them at their cover shows. They always did such an awesome job on it.

Day 303 - A Fine Frenzy - You Picked Me
DAY 303
A Fine Frenzy – "You Picked Me”
From "One Cell In the Sea"
I did not think I knew anything about this band/performer. But I have heard one other song by A Fine Frenzy called "Almost Lover." I have had a hard time warming up to that song just because it reminds me so much of "Goodbye My Lover" by James Blunt. Seems like a semi copy cat even though it really isn't, it is just my brain.
I found this song on a random MySpace profile and instantly loved it. I looked up the lyrics and really connected to the song. The strings add so much to the song. Her vocals are really interesting. They are good, but very unique. Not a super strong vocalist and not whispy either.... she has some power, just uses it in an interesting way which pleases my ears. :)
The video is pretty cool too...
Not much else that I can say about the song since I just found it. But here are the lyrics that grabbed my attention.
It is so romantic... :P
One, two, three
Counting out the signs we see
The tall buildings
Fading in the distance
Only dots on a map
Four, five, six
The two of us a perfect fit
You're all mine, all mine
And all I can say
Is you blow me away
Like an apple on a tree
Hiding out behind the leaves
I was difficult to reach
But you picked me
Like a shell upon a beach
Just another pretty piece
I was difficult to see
But you picked me
Yeah you picked me
So softly
Rain against the windows
And the strong coffee
Warming up my fingers
In this fisherman's house
You got me
Searched the sand
And climbed the tree
And brought me back down
And all I can say
Is you blow me away
Like an apple on a tree
Hiding out behind the leaves
I was difficult to reach

Day 302 - Phantom Blue - A Little Evil
DAY 302
Phantom Blue – "A Little Evil”
From "Built To Perform"
I am shocked I had not thought of picking a song by Phantom Blue. They are one of my favorite bands from the 1990's era.
This song "A Little Evil" is one of my favorites on this album. Marty Friedman from Megadeth actually played some of the lead guitar riffs on this song.
Phantom Blue formed in the late 1980's and stayed together until about 2001.It is sad that their careers did not last longer as it seems there was decent talent in the band. (Linda McDonald went on to play in the "Iron Maiden" tribute band, "The Iron Maidens.")
These are women who could rock and did it very very well.

Day 301 - Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
DAY 301
Pink Floyd – "Wish You Were Here”
From "Wish You Were Here"
I am honestly not a huge Pink Floyd fan. Not that I do not recognize their talent or their impressive contribution to the music world in general, I just am not really moved by the majority of what I know of their material at this time. I may change my opinion as I mature and grow in my own musical taste but as of now... there ya have it.
This song is the exception for me. I really do love "Wish You Were Here" very much.
I feel like there is something within it I can feel something for. It is weird. Maybe I am just not far enough out there to really understand the depth of the Pink Floyd perception. Maybe I will get there some day. :)
Here is a wonderful performance of Pink Floyd performing this song in 1994 in this YouTube clip.

Day 300 - Ellis Paul - Paris In A Day
DAY 300
Ellis Paul – "Paris In A Day”
From "A Carnival of Voices"
Song # 300! Wow! That is neat. I sure have been enjoying this project...
So speaking of days, this song is about doing "Paris In A Day." The lyrics are truly a story. So smart and witty. The lyrics really hold your attention. I could not find a video sample of this song but I am going to post the lyrics here because this song is really THAT amazing.
(You can listen to Ellis Paul on his website anytime for free! So check it out!)
We were drunk fools in Paris, stumbling on the sidewalk
that runs along the Seine, and on the Cathedral
all the gargoyles watched us laughing,
"Two stupid Americans..."
We were at the mercy of this passionate waiter
who pulled the corks at the Osterasis Cafe
he kept serving us wine we hadn't ordered
then he blamed us for the weather,
it was cold and rainy -
but we raised a glass up to him anyway
We did Paris in a day,
what would Marie Antionette say?
We made a vow on the Champs Elysees
that nothing would come between us
The Mona Lisa, I said, "She smiles just like she knows me"
you said, "She's a woman with nothing to lose -
She gathers a crowd around her, then she
flirts with perfect strangers, but she'll
never take a lover in the Louvre -
she will never take a lover in the Louvre..."
We did Paris in a Day
what would Quasimodo say?
Would he stand on top of Notre Dame
and throw down tourists to us?
a thousand stairs up the Pompadou
we were gasping at the view
if we tried for Jim Morrison's gravesite too
we'd probably have to find a tour bus
and man, how do we find a tour bus
without finding another day
We took the M across the Seine
and headed for the Eiffel tower
and there the street merchants
called us out by name
"Cool shades here for the Americans"
They said in their finest hipster English
and then they told us, "Every Yankee looks the same"
I said, "Is it the camera case, or our American grace?"
They said,
"You all just look the same..."
We lit a candle for a ghost in the Notre Dame Cathedral
We got lost on the Left Bank looking for a place in which to stay
when we told the waiter there what we had done, he said,
"Only an American would attempt Paris in a day...
Only an American would do Paris in a day..."
We did Paris in a day
what would Marcel Marceau say?
We put up our feet at the Fountain Cafe
and toasted the bond between us
We drank sherry with an Englishman
we caught up like long lost friends
under the Arc we watched the sunset end
and laughed at the miles that had passed beneath us
the miles that passed beneath us
You said, "That's kilometers, baby"
but I wouldn't let it come between us
nothing will come between us
nothing will come between us...

Day 299 - Tom Petty - You Don't Know How It Feels
DAY 299
Tom Petty – "You Don't Know How It Feels”
From "Wildflowers"
I realized the other night how much I enjoy this song as I was driving home from my friends house at around 11PM with the windows down, the radio cranked up, and feeling the cold night air blow across my face and through my hair. It felt so nice. So liberating.
I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Tom Petty in concert last year and it was fantastic. I truly enjoyed his stage presence and interaction with the crowd. This song is so mellow and chill... I really enjoy the harmonica, it adds some nice folky elements to the song.
The video to this song is really interesting because of the simplicity. I like the obvious background that is just slightly out of focus with Tom in the front just spinning. It is just cool.

Day 298 - Bif Naked - Moment of Weakness
DAY 298
Bif Naked – "Moment of Weakness”
From "I Bificus"
This was the first song I had ever heard of Bif Naked and it was enough to make me buy the album without having heard anything else. I have several favorite tracks from this album now.
I love the punk edge she brings to her songs, but I especially love that she has an amazingly strong voice and seems to have a ton of fun singing. You can really feel her energy in her songs even on her recorded material.
The video to "Moment of Weakness" is pretty cute. I love low budget creativity. It is awesome.
And she is a tattooed lady like me, ya gotta have love for the inked ladies! :D

DAY 297
Maxine Nightingale – "Right Back Where We Started From”
From "Right Back Where We Started From"
I heard this song on the movie "The Family Stone" the other day and was reminded that I really enjoy it.
I know very little about it, just know I like it and it is fun to dance to... Maxine has an awesome voice....
Sadly I could not locate a video of Maxine singing this song but here it is being played in this YouTube clip.

Day 296 - Soul Survivors - Expressway to Your Heart
DAY 296
Soul Survivors – "Expressway to Your Heart”
From "When the Whistle Blows Anything Goes"
I had a different song in mind for today, but then Glenn and I were on our way to our friends place tonight and we were listening to a compilation CD and this song came on and it felt so good to jam to it that I decided I had to pick it today!
I LOVE the bridge to this song. It is so groovy!
Funny enough the first time I heard this song was on the movie "Adventures In Babysitting."
You can check out the song on this YouTube clip. If you like soulful music, this would be a fun listen for ya!

Day 295 - The Cranberries - Zombie
DAY 295
The Cranberries – "Zombie”
From "No Need to Argue"
(Halloween time must bring on these creepier titles... here I go with Zombies again. Hahaha...)
My sister performed this song with her band the other night and did a great job on it. Really just pulled a WOW on the crowd...
I have always enjoyed this song and was reminded of that last night so I decided I needed to pick it today. The video to this song was actually my first introduction to it. It was such an awesome video.
I like the unique vocal stylings of Dolores O'Riordan on this track... she is such an amazing vocalist and it really shows on this song...
From what I read this song was written in memory of two boys, Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, who were killed in an IRA bombing in Warrington, Cheshire (North-West England) on 20 March 1993.

Day 294 - The Zombies – Time Of The Season
DAY 294
The Zombies – "Time Of The Season”
From "Odessey and Oracle"
This song came on the radio tonight on my way home from work and I was surprised that I had not picked it yet.
This is such a well written song. It has a slightly sexy feel to it...
This is another track my Dad initially introduced me to as a child. I adore the vocals. The whisper of his vocal tone is pleasing to my ears as well as the harmonies.
You can listen to the song here or you can see a more recent video of The Zombies performing the song here.

Day 293 - Ellis Paul - Angel In Manhattan
DAY 293
Ellis Paul – "Angel In Manhattan”
From "Translucent Soul"
This song is amazing especially when you listen to Ellis tell the story of how he was inspired to write it. To summarize it is about a love lost ultimately, but a certain surprise is the "Angel" in Manhattan was a beautiful drag queen which was the initial inspiration. If that does not peak your Ellis interest nothing will, especially if you listen to this song.
This is just a wonderfully visual story told by my hero.
Here is a fabulous performance by Ellis singing "Angel In Manhattan" live. Enjoy and let it soak in. :)

Day 292 - Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You
DAY 292
Alicia Keys – "If I Ain't Got You”
From "The Diary of Alicia Keys"
I love how soulful this song is. Alicia Keys is an newer artist who has refused to become a "sex symbol" but instead relies on her talent as she appears to want to be taken seriously. THAT is SO refreshing. She is still very attractive but she does not have to show all of her physical attributes off to pack a punch and to have staying power.
I like the hooks in this song a lot. The arrangement is very inviting and groovin'. It feels good to listen to. It is just a chilled out track that you can kick back and listen to. Very good stuff....
I am not super fond of the video concept but you can hear the song on this YouTube clip should you desire to do so. :)

Day 291 - 2Pac - Dear Mama
DAY 291
2Pac – "Dear Mama”
From "Me Against the World"
This is an out of the ordinary choice for me. I am not a huge rap fan, but I do have an appreciation for the genre that is very sincere. I know nothing of "thug" life. I am originally an Idaho hick for cripe sake... :P Hahahaha I have knowledge of wannabe thugs. They are some funny boys.... Anyway...
Glenn and I were discussing rapper "battles". Basically a battle of words. And 2Pac came up in conversation naturally as he was a main player in the big "east coast/west coast" rivalry.
2Pac, though I may not have always agreed with his message or the lifestyle he may have promoted, I deeply respect this track of his depicting the love he had for his mother.
(Interesting fact, 2Pac's mama was a black panther.... big surprise right? *LOL*)
This is a really powerful song. The genuine and real lyrics are raw and it really draws a visual picture. Even if you did not grow up in that kind of lifestyle or neighborhood, you can still relate and you really feel the words.
This track reminds me of how no matter what kind of mistakes or garbage might have happened when you were a kid, you only have one Mama... and they did the best they could ultimately. At the very least, they gave us life...
Check out the song and video on YouTube.

Day 290 - Pearl Jam - Alive
DAY 290
Pearl Jam – "Alive”
From "Ten"
Gotta make this quick cuz I am a little late posting today...
This song has a nice chill groove that I have always enjoyed. The grunge era was one I connected to pretty quickly but I have always been picky about the band. Pearl Jam is one of the best.
I adore the opening guitar riff every time I hear it. Very rock n' roll... And Eddie's vocal is rough and dirty. Awesome!
