DAY 165
Eels – "I Need Some Sleep”
From "Shrek 2 Soundtrack"
This is just a very pretty song. I love the vocals and the mellow vibe. I really dig a lot of the Eels music overall. They are unique and very talented. 'Nuff said. ;)

Ellis Paul – "Sweet Mistakes”
From "Sweet Mistakes"
What is to be said that I have not already said?? This is another of Ellis Paul's lyrical masterpieces as well as a vocal masterpiece.
The vocals are really strong, powerful, and clean.
A telling story we all can relate to in some way. Another great tune by one of the greatest story tellers of our time.

Day 163 - Ellis Paul - Martyr's Lounge
DAY 163
Ellis Paul – "Martyr's Lounge”
From "Live"
As I am on my "Ellis" weekend, I am keeping with my theme today. Ellis will ask during his performance what songs we want to hear and I have been lucky each year and the song I have requested has been chosen every time. Last night this was my request.
This song tells a creative story about a bar up in heaven where the patrons are famous folks who have passed away. It is a very entertaining song. The music is, naturally, very well written as well.

DAY 162
Ellis Paul – "3,000 Miles”
From "Stories"
It's my 30th birthday. I know that I am getting this in just under the wire, so I HAVE to make it brief.
We saw Ellis Paul tonight, and he was amazing. It was a wonderful show, and a wonderful night with friends.
I am choosing 3,000 miles for my song today because I always look forward to singing this song with Ellis when we get to see him play live, and tonight was no exception.
Turning 30 is not as bad as I had anticipated. In fact, I am actually looking forward to this decade.
Thank you, Ellis, for a wonderful evening.

Day 161 - Kooks - She Moves In Her Own Way
DAY 161
Kooks – "She Moves In Her Own Way”
From "Inside In/Inside Out"
So I just listened to this song. For the first time tonight. And in the words of The Replacements... I'M IN LOVE WITH THAT SONG!!!!!!!
Wow, wow, wow! I was just farting around online and my dear friend, Ken, had this song featured on his MySpace and I am totally hooked!!!!!!!!!
The vocals are totally charming, the song has a fun vibe that I have not heard since the likes of Tommy James or Hermans Hermits.... I am loving the guitar riffs and the drums.... man, I am listening to the track as I type this and I just love it! The hand claps really add an amazing quality as well. Just enough kick in's and quiet moments. I could totally dance to this, jam to this, sing to this, oh yeah, this just became a Rachael favorite classic. Thank you KEN!!!!
As luck would have it I found the video here on YouTube! I have to say I am THRILLED to see "normal" looking folks making music and video's again!

DAY 159
Natasha Bedingfield – "These Words (I Love You, I Love You)”
From "Unwritten"
I love it when you hear a song for the first time and you instantly "get it." This song was a perfect fit for my ears from the get go.
It is lyrically very creative, it has an excellent beat, awesome kick in's, and is just hella fun to dance to, listen to, sing to etc, etc, etc....
This girl has a seriously powerful voice and she knows how to make it work for her. I sense so much honesty in her writing and she gives me a genuine vibe in this jaded industry.
I found 2 different video's for this song. I like this one the best... but this one is pretty cool too...

Day 158 - Aimee Mann -Nothing Is Good Enough
DAY 158
Aimee Mann – "Nothing Is Good Enough”
From "Bachelor No. 2"
I love Aimee Mann as a singer/songwriter. She is amazingly talented. This song is especially unique. I love the lyrics, the mellow yet semi sad vibe...
This is the only clip I could find featuring the song. Some random video, (which oddly sorta fits the song in a way), but more importantly it gives you a sample to hear the entire song.
The lyrics are so good I am going to post them for your reading pleasure and curiosity should your interest be peaked enough to maintain your attention for a moment more:
Once upon a time is how it always goes
but I'll make it brief
what was started out with such excitement
now I'd gladly end end with relief
in what now has become a familiar motif:
That nothing is good enough
for people like you
who have to have someone take the fall
and something to sabotage--
determined to lose it all
Critics at their worst could never criticize
the way that you do
no, there's no one else, I find,
to undermine or dash a hope
quite like you
and you do it so casually, too
Cause nothing is good enough
for people like you
who have to have someone take the fall
and something to sabotage--
determined to lose it all
Ladies and gentlemen--
here's exhibit A
didn't I try again?
And did the effort pay?
Wouldn't a smarter man
simply walk away?
It doesn't really help that you can never say
what you're looking for
but you'll know it when you hear it,
know it when you see it walk through the door
So you say--
so you've said many times before
But nothing is good enough
for people like you
who have to have someone take the fall
and something to sabotage--
determined to lose it all

Day 157 - Patsy Cline - Walking After Midnight
DAY 157
Patsy Cline – "Walking After Midnight”
From "The Patsy Cline Srory"
This is one of my favorite Patsy Cline songs. I truly love Patsy's music, but this is a stand out track for me simply because it is so well written and sung.... and it is a song my Dad plays all the time on the trumpet. We have had some awesome family jam sessions playing that song. Good times, good times... :)
Here is an awesome old clip of Patsy performing this song live. What a voice. She was so amazing. That voice gave her her immortality.

Day 154
Cute is What We Aim For - "The Curse of Curves"
From "The Same Old Blood Rush with a New Touch"
All I know of this song is the video.
I had never heard of this band or the song until last night. I flipped through a few friends MySpace pages and one of my buddies had this video on their page and I instantly fell in love with the song simply for the lyric "The Curse of Curves."
I really like the creativity of the video and the lyrics are just cool... I don't have much more of an opinion but I listened to a few clips on the album and me thinks I may be making a purchase soon... ;)
Sounds like a lot of what is out there, but there is a unique edge I am digging.

From "Facelift"
This is one of my all time favorite alternative rock songs. I have always adored Layne Staley as a vocalist and this song is most definitely one of his best.
This YouTube clip is really awesome... it shows how hard they rocked on this song. Rockin' guitars, and those amazingly powerful vocals by Layne..... he looks so viral and intense in this video. What a performer. What a loss... That man OWNED the stage when he was on it...

DAY 152
Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds – "Don' Pull Your Love”
From 1971 Single Release
I don't really know why, but I have always had an odd fascination with this song.
It has an almost cheesy urgency to the chorus, but I love the horns and the strong lead vocal.
I love this top 10,000 list for many reasons, but one big one I am reminded of tonight is that I realize that certain bands and performers I really like do a lot of songs that I have forgotten about until I start poking around and searching for certain song facts.
These guys are really good!
I could not locate an actual video but the song is featured in this YouTube clip. The visuals are unimportant, but at least you can hear the song. :)

From "No Home in This World"
This is my second Brother Machine pick, and it definitely deserves a spot on my top 10,000. This song is a very well produced, and it's just super-fun and creative.
I really think that Brother Machine is radio ready, and I hope Seth gets the opportunity to be heard by much larger audiences someday. I LOVE this song. It's AWESOME! You need to hear it! You can listen to it on Brother Machine's Myspace profile.

From "Bellybuttom"
This song came into my head today as I anticipated my hubby's return from his folks place after being away all week helping them out. I called him and left him a message and sang a portion of the chorus to him.
Jelly fish is such an upbeat band. I love the crisp vocals and the harmonies in a lot of their music.

Day 149 - Marshall Crenshaw - Someday, Someway
DAY 149
Marshall Crenshaw – "Someday, Someway”
From "The Best of Marshall Crenshaw: This Is Easy"
This Marshall Crenshaw track is very fun and upbeat. I had never heard Marshal Crenshaw until Glenn's and my 5th wedding anniversary and we were in our friend Richard's record shop here in Spokane called Recorded Memories. Richard's shop was not technically open, but he knows us and let us in to look around anyway since he happened to be there.
This specific CD was playing in the back ground and it kept catching my ear, and I finally asked him who it was and asked if he carried the CD and he DID! So we bought it that day and have LOVED this CD ever since.
You can hear a lot of Buddy Holly influence on Marshall. An all american kind of sound. he is incredibly talented and even though his inspirations are somewhat obvious he still makes his music very unique.

Day 148 - The Osmonds - One Bad Apple
DAY 148
The Osmonds – "One Bad Apple”
I will keep this short and sweet as I am risking ever being considered cool ever again, but the rebel in me is urging me to pick this song... hahahaha...
I heard this on the radio today and DON'T ASK ME WHY but I really dig this track. Sure they were competing with The Jackson Five or whatever... who cares...
It is silly, the lyrics are sub par at best, but I have always liked this song....
'Nuff said... (let the stoning begin.) :P

Sheryl Crow – "Leaving Las Vegas”
From "Tuesday Night Music Club"
I love this song. Off notes and all. It has a great story, good content, a great beat... It is just an all around fun track. Excellent album too!
This was the first song I heard on the album actually. Here is the video on YouTube for your listening and viewing pleasure. ;)

Day 145 - The Beatles - I'm So Tired
DAY 145
The Beatles – "I'm So Tired”
From "The White Album"
This song so fits my frame of mind, body, and spirit right now. I wish I could go to bed and sleep away this whole week.
I am truly quite tired. I had to get up early to take my hubby to the air port and get to work for an early morning meeting. Though literally being tired may not be where the song is coming from, it still fits me today. :P Does that make sense? Probably not... lack of sleep does that to you. :P
Anyways, I love the mellow bits of this song, I love the kick in, and I am totally in love with the bass line. Simple but moving. I get it.
I am just in love with The White Album. :)
Here is a nice YouTube clip with the song and some cool Beatles photo's and footage for your eyes and ears to feast upon. ;)

Day 144 - Sarah McLachlan - Stupid
DAY 144
Sarah McLachlan – "Stupid”
From "Afterglow"
This song is very passionate and intense lyrically and musically. It starts out with a softness that turns almost to rage.
The song really grabs your attention and makes you listen. It is very easy to relate to as most anyone who has had failed relationships can put themself in the writers' thoughts and feelings.
Sarah McLachlan is such an amazing songstress and I truly respect her work as a songwriter and musician.
Here is the YouTube clip of the video. It is very artistic and beautifully done as only Sarah can do. :)

Day 143 - Korn - Ya'll Want A Single
DAY 143
Korn – "Ya'll Want A Single”
From "Take A Look In The Mirror"
Shifting gears in the biggest way for my song choice today... :P
We were visiting friends and watching Korn in concert in HDTV and this song came on and I was reminded how much I love to rock out to this track!
This song kicks your ass six ways from Sunday! It hits hard, it is unapologetic, and balls out.
A lot of people say Korn sold out... I think that is lame. They have evolved as artists, but sold out? Nah. Not in my opinion.
I think it is B.S. to say a band sold out just because they got popular with more than the underground junkies and made a success of themselves and had the guts to evolve as musicians and artists. Just my take. (Stepping down off my soap box now.)
Anyways, good stuff... check out the video if ya'll wanna see it. ;)

Day 142 - Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) - Blow Me A Kiss
DAY 142
Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) – "Blow Me A Kiss”
From "Bubble Gum, Lemonade & Something for Mama"
This song has been running through my head all day. It is no secret that I adore Mama Cass. But this song is especially sweet.
Her vocal is so sweet and strong and the lyrics ring more like a lullaby than anything. This is just a very cool, mellow, laid back tune and I love it!

Day 141 - Al Stewart - Year of the Cat
DAY 141
Al Stewart – "Year of the Cat”
From "Year of the Cat"
This is the song I was going to pick yesterday... ironic that the song title and album title are the same just like my pick yesterday... anyway...
This is one of my favorite oldies. Glenn reminded me that this song was the 100th highest charting song the year I was born, (1977), go figure. :P
I LOVE how lyrically descriptive this song is. The arrangement of the music and lyrics is just magical. The soft vocals and gentle piano solo's really add the perfect vibe to the song.
Here is a cool YouTube clip for your viewing pleasure should you choose to take a peek at it. ;)

DAY 140
Wings – "Band On The Run”
From "Band On The Run"
I had a totally different song picked out for today and then I heard this song on the radio and it has been stuck in my head all day long. This album is one of my favorites. The first 3 songs are wonderful!
Whenever I hear this song I have the urge to crank up the volume and sing my little heart out. It just makes me feel good inside and out!

Day 139 - Counting Crows - Rain King
DAY 139
Counting Crows – "Rain King”
From "August and Everything After"
I can not say I am familiar with a great deal of the Counting Crows material, but I know the hits... the stuff on the radio. Our friends, Monte and Doug, perform this song from time to time when they play out in local clubs. They are good friends and a dynamite duo. They do a very fun rendition of this tune.
Here is a YouTube clip of the song during a live performance. It is awfully slow for my taste, still sorta pretty, but I VERY MUCH prefer the faster version of the song.

Gavin DeGraw – "Follow Through”
From "Chariot"
The first time I saw Gavin Degraw was on Good Morning America, and I only caught a little blip of him, but he caught my attention and I became obsessed in finding out who he was. It took a little while, but I finally figured it out. Although I am not familiar with the whole album, this song is a stand-out track to me. Excellent orchestration, intriguing lyrics. A very solid song.

Day 137 - The Shins - Kissing The Lipless
DAY 137
The Shins – "Kissing The Lipless”
From "Chutes Too Narrow"
Glenn introduced me to this song awhile ago and reminded me of how much I like it today.
It has a unique sound, some amazing kick in's and vocals, and is just an all around awesome song.
It is fun to listen to pretty much anytime anywhere. When it comes on, dancing ensues! It is a must!
Here is the video on Youtube. It is creative and fun as well! Worth a watch and definitely a listen! I LOVE when musicians look REAL. Long live our average looking, amazingly talented, creative souls.
In a small way, substance still lives in our music, we just have to look a little harder for it nowadays. ;)
