Day 110 - Lillian Axe - The Needle and Your Pain

DAY 110
Lillian Axe – "The Needle and Your Pain”

Day 109 - Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Let It Ride

DAY 109
Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) – "Let It Ride”
From "Bachman-Turner Overdrive II"

So I am getting down to the wire and I wanted to pick a song, and Glenn says to me, "I so have your song of the day picked out."

So yeah, he was right. He knows my soft spot for Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO.) My Dad raised us on bands like BTO! And BTO is one of my Dad's all time favorites. I remember Dad telling me about the time he went to see BTO in concert and some no name band was opening up for them... yeah... the no name band.... was Aerosmith! *LOL* Great stories and good times.

These albums were great because of the simplicity. Glenn and I were just chatting about this. It was common for bands to put no more than 8 songs on a record. So it was short enough that fans would play the songs over and over again and that is ultimately how those songs became classics... legends even!

Brilliance really...

I am sure this will not be the last time BTO lands on my top 10,000 list. "Let It Ride" has such an AWESOME driving beat and just begs to be rocked out to. The powerful vocals and amazing music just solidifies this song as a main staple in rock history.

Day 108 - Just Feel Better - Santana (Featuring Steven Tyler)

DAY 108
Santana (Featuring Steven Tyler) – "Just Feel Better”
From "All That I Am"

The first time this song came on the radio I FELL IN LOVE! I adore Steven Tyler as it is but this track with the genius of Carlos Santana was absolutely MAGICAL for me!

It is the best kind of power ballad in my opinion. The lyrics are sung with passion and intensity. The lyrics are relatable, but not boring. And the music is just gorgeous!

When this song was initially released on the radio air waves they played it pretty often and then it just seemed to drop out of existence which was sad to me. But it will forever live on my top 10,000 list for sure!!!!

I had never seen the video until tonight. Here is a link to the video on YouTube if you'd like to see it.

From "Yes I Am"

With 9 minutes before the deadline, I better make this very quick.

This is a song that I always choose to sing whenever we go out to do Karaoke. It's a very safe range for my vocals. This is from my favorite Melissa Etheridge album that I have heard. I really respect her writing ability and her talent.

Day 106 - Cyndi Lauper - My First Night Without You

DAY 106
Cyndi Lauper – "My First Night Without You”
From "A Night To Remember"

My friends and I watched the movie "Goonies" tonight. It is one of my favorite movies of all time without question. I watched it as a little kid and I still love it to this day. Cyndi Lauper's music is featured in the movie and I got to thinking about her music and how much I love listening to her songs.

This specific song is on an amazing album which I have many favorites on, however, tonight this ballad suites me.

This song has almost a Motown soulful feel.

Day 105 - My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade

DAY 105
My Chemical Romance – "Welcome To The Black Parade”
From "The Black Parade"

It is funny… I was struggling with what song I wanted to choose today, and as I was driving home this song came on the radio. This is the first time I have heard it and the lyrics at the very beginning grabbed my attention and I had to turn it up.

When I was a young boy,
My Father took me into the city,
To see a marching band.

He said, "Son when, you grow up,
Would you be the savior of the broken,
The beaten and the damned?"

He said, "Will you defeat them,
Your demons and all the non-believers,
The plans that they have made?

"Because one day, I leave you,
A phantom to lead you in the summer,
To join the black parade."

I don’t know exactly why but I was so drawn in by the lyrics and the tone that lead vocalist, Gerard Way, sang especially at the very beginning that I felt this had to be my choice for today.

I like the "punkish" vibe this band has, but also how they mix almost a late ‘80’s early ‘90’s guitar in there as well. This is a fun song to drive to and to crank up for some good tunes.

Check out the video on YouTube if you like, it is pretty cool.

Day 104 - Merril Bainbridge - Song for Neen/Sleeping Dogs

DAY 104
Merril Bainbridge – "Song for Neen/Sleeping Dogs”
From "The Garden"

Technically this is a 2 song choice, however, you really can not really listen to one without the other because on the album they run together.

The lyrics are the typical sweet and pretty style I have come to expect from Merril Bainbridge, but in the “2nd half” of the song, (Sleeping Dogs), I love the way she references “I Started A Joke” by The Bee Gee’s during the song’s chorus as well. It was unexpected and it fit so well. She kinda gave it a punky/poppy vibe which was very cool.

All in all just a very fun and energetic couple of tunes that I love!!!

Day 102 - Ellis Paul - Summertime (1st Demo)

DAY 102
Ellis Paul – "Summertime (1st Demo)”

What a gorgeous song this one is. I have only heard it featured thus far on Ellis Paul’s MySpace page, but I can not wait to see what album it will be released on.

The simplicity of the piano and his vocal on this specific recording are breathtaking.

As anyone who knows me knows, Ellis is my ultimate musical hero. His talent, depth, and genuine spirit shine through in every masterpiece he creates.

You can feel and hear all that is beautiful and worth while in life through his music, this song is an incredible example of that gift he possesses. You can just feel and hear beauty, life, love, God, passion, dreams, hope, faith….. it is a real blessing to experience this man’s music.

I am SO thrilled I will be seeing him in concert in Seattle on my 30th birthday, April 27th! This will be one of the best birthday’s of my existence I am certain!

Day 101 - Brother Machine - All the Time

DAY 101
Brother Machine – "All the Time”
From "Going Nuts"

Glenn and I are both big fans of Brother Machine. This song is short and simple, however that's kind of what makes it a magical song.

The harmonies are spot on. The female vocal by Hope Irish especially gives it a whimsical feel. When Seth hums into the microphone in the beginning of the song, it is unexpected, and very inventive. Pure genius!

The very end just tops the song off, because you can hear how much fun they had making the track.

Day 100 - Luscious Jackson - Ladyfingers

DAY 100
Luscious Jackson – "Ladyfingers”
From "Electric Honey"

I made to 100! WooHoo!!!

So today I choose one of my favorite kick ass songs!

“Ladyfingers” by Luscious Jackson is such a cool song. The beat is unique and groovy for a semi pop song and the lyrics are very well written. Mysterious enough that they leave a lot to the listener’s imagination but not over thought.

You know a band has an awesome line up when one of them was accepted as a Beastie Boy! That is just cool! (Kate Schellenbach was the ex-Beastie Boy… err uhhh… Girl… whatever…)

So sad that Luscious Jackson broke up in 2000, but they gave us some great music to treasurer forever, so ROCK ON ladies!

It is 11:55pm on my computer.... almost did not make it with my song choice...

My creative writing has been lacking on my most recent posts. Bummer.

Anyway, today I am choosing a song I was reminded of as Glenn was going through some billboard chart music just now. “Shake It” is a very mellow and fun track that you can still groove to. In truth I know virtually nothing about Ian Matthews but I have always enjoyed this song.

Day 96 - Mike Cross - The Scotsman

DAY 96
Mike Cross – "The Scotsman”
From - "Creme De La Cross"

I first heard this song as a young child. I LOVE this style of music. It is just so happy and unbelievably fun. I just have to post the lyrics here because they are SO funny!

Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left a bar one evening fair
And one could tell by how he walked the he'd drunk more than his share
He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet
And he stumbled off in to the grass to sleep beside the street

Ring-ding didle idle i de-o
Ring dye didley i oh
He stumbled off in to the grass to sleep beside the street

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by
One says to the other, with a twinkle in her eye
"See yon sleeping Scotsman, so strong a handsome built?
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt."

Ring-ding didle idle i de-o
Ring dye didley i oh
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt

They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there, behold, for them to view beneath his Scotish skirt
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth

Ring-ding didle idle i de-o
Ring dye didley i oh
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth

They marveled for a moment, then one said "We must be gone.
Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along"
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied in to a bow
Around the bonnie star the Scot's kilt did lift and show

Ring-ding didle iidle i de-o
Ring dye didley i oh
Around the bonnie star the scot's kilt did lift and show

Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards the trees
Behind the bush he lifts his kilt, and gawks at what he sees
And in a startled voice he says, to what's before his eyes,
"Lad, I don't know where ya been, but I see you've won first prize"

Ring-ding didle idle i de-o
Ring dye didley i oh
Lad, I don't know where you've been, but I see you've won first prize

Day 95 - Weird Al Yankovic - You Don't Love Me Anymore

DAY 95
Weird Al Yankovic–"You Don’t Love Me Anymore”
From Off The Deep End

So today I choose a song from the king of parody, Weird Al Yankovic.

This is probably in my top 5 favorite Weird Al songs. I come from a family of parody geniuses and we all have this odd talent to pervert songs in the weirdest ways with very little effort.

My Grandpa was the master! :)

“You Don’t Love Me Anymore” is such a hilarious concept. You hear these soft meaningful chords and lyrics at first and then these strange psychotic lyrics kick in, but the songs maintains the gushy ballad vibe.

I just think it is a fantastically funny tune and I love Weird Al.

Day 94 - Gwen Stefani featuring Akon - The Sweet Escape

DAY 94
Gwen Stefani featuring Akon–"The Sweet Escape”
From The Sweet Escape

I have to admit I was really geared up to not like this new Gwen Stefani album in any way, shape, or form. Seems silly to prepare yourself to really not like an artist, but Gwen has put out some semi-questionable songs as of late in my opinion.

I was a huge No Doubt fan in truth and it is not really that I don’t like the sound so much, because I am not apposed to artists trying different things so much as I question the image thing I guess. So much of the publicity seems so purposeful and gimmicky that I sometimes feel like Gwen is losing her edge. She is a gorgeous lady without question, but I think her talent and beauty can be seen without all the added bells and whistles and skin. Just my opinion… getting off my soap box now…

On to the song. This song,“The Sweet Escape", caught my attention right away. It has a “do wop” vibe and it is just cutesy and super fun. The “WooHoo’s” added in by Akon are really fun as well. It is just a feel good kind of tune that I dig.

Day 92 - Led Zeppelin - D'yer Mak'er

DAY 92
Led Zeppelin –“D’yer Mak’er”
From Houses of the Holy

D’yer Mak’er by Led Zeppelin is such a fun song to listen to, again this is yet another song I have to dance and groove to when I hear it come on.

Of all of Led Zeppelin’s material this is probably one of the most upbeat sounding of all of them.

My Mom actually turned me on to this song as a young child. And though I do love a lot of different Zeppelin tunes, this one would rank in my top 5 for sure! The lyrics are so simple and there is truly not much to them, but all the Oh’s and Ah’s are placed just right to make this an incredibly fun song!

Apparently Zep was actually going for a reggae vibe when they recorded this song which I think they achieved quite nicely.

Another fun bit of trivia is how the song title is actually pronounced as “Jer-maker”

Day 91 - Stevie Nicks - Rooms On Fire

DAY 91
Stevie Nicks –“Rooms On Fire”
From The Other Side of the Mirror

I have been on a little bit of a Stevie Nicks kick the last little bit.

This song is one of my favorites that Stevie Nicks does. It has a nice groove and I like the way the backing vocals support the lead vocal.

The lyrics also catch my ear but the way she has arranged the lyrics catch my ear almost more than the lyrics themselves, if that makes any sense….

For example, in the very first verse she sings:

“Somewhere out in the back of your mind
Comes your real life and the life that you know
It seems like it was the creation of some of those same old things
It seemed to be the only thing left out in the light
She had trusted many
But been unfamiliar with
Almost everyone but you”

None of the lyrics technically rhyme yet it still comes together very beautifully.

Day 89 - Fleming & John - Ugly Girl

DAY 89
Fleming & John –“Ugly Girl”
From The Way We Are

The first time I listened to this song it caught my ear. The vocals are very pleasant but the lyrics are just fantastic!!!

The song really expresses how anyone would feel in a break up situation. It is so natural for us to pick apart the person an ex may be seeing after a relationship dissolves.

I have not listened to really anything but this song by this specific artist, (that I am aware of), but I like the sound samples I found so I may just have to buy this CD. There music and vocals put me in mind of The Cardigans.

Day 88 - Lawn Gnome Barbershop Mutants –The Lawn Gnome Bar Mitzvah

DAY 88
Lawn Gnome Barbershop Mutants –“The Lawn Gnome Bar Mitzvah”

I am picking this song today because it always makes me smile and laugh.

It was originally recorded and written by 15-16 Puzzle, a fantastic songwriter Glenn and I became acquainted with through Songfight. 15-16 Puzzle has quite a way with words and his lyrics are always very catchy and creative. The lyrics to ”The Lawn Gnome Bar Mitzvah” are certainly no exception.

My, hubby, Glenn, decided to take this song one step further and to give the vocal that little Gnome touch… by singing it and then pitch shifting it. It turned out hilarious!

I love it and I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates good humor. :)

Day 87 - Merril Bainbridge - Julie

DAY 87
Merril Bainbridge –“Julie”
From The Garden

This song is so lovely and just so beautifully written. It is soft and meaningful.

In truth, (and in my opinion), Merril Bainbridge was labeled as a passing pop star, when in reality, she is a very deep writer on many of her songs.

You can see a deeper meaning in many of them, but most of the tracks that you notice that writing style in were not the ones that you heard a lot on the radio.

I think a lot of folks who like Julianna Hatfield would enjoy Merril Bainbridge.

“Julie” is a song that anyone could really relate to. It encourages one to not be afraid to take risks and be unique… it acknowledges that though life can be mundane and boring we can make it so much more.

It asks us that blessed question that was posed in the fantastic book, “Who Moved My Cheese” by Spencer Johnson, M.D.:

“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?”

THAT is a powerful notion if you really give it some thought...

Day 86 - Stevie Nicks - That Made Me Stronger

DAY 86
Stevie Nicks –“That Made Me Stronger”
From Trouble In Shangri-La

I was very excited when this album was released in 2001. I had not heard any of the tracks or anything, I just knew it was a new Stevie Nicks release and she is just awesome and unique.

Most recently I saw Stevie perform with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers here in Spokane last fall. She was Stellar! The whole show was actually very very good.

I am choosing this song specifically as it is my favorite song on the album and I relate to the lyrics. Especially in the chorus where it says,

”Well you know me better than I know myself
Will you write this for me
He says no, you write your songs yourself
That made me stronger
It made me hold on to me.”

These lines remind me of Glenn and I in a way because we usually butt heads a lot when we write songs. It is not funny at the time, but usually we giggle when we look back at it… We can fight like wild cats but we make up just as passionately. I like being able to fight with him and staying just as in love with him no matter what. Hehehe.

I kind of assume Stevie must have been inspired to write this because of her past relationship with Lindsey Buckingham, since they too were songwriting partners and in a relationship at one time… but who knows.

The chorus is definitely the hook of this song for me.

DAY 85
Corrosion of Conformity –“Albatross”
From Deliverance

I am picking another of my more favorite rock songs, “Albatross”! This song just rocks, as does the video!

The guitar riff at the very beginning is one of my favorites of all time. It is just CRUNCHY and balls out! And when the chorus kicks in you really get in the groove! Oooooh, gives me chills just listening back to it!!!!

I was fortunate enough to see them live opening for Megadeth in 1994 and it was one of the BEST concerts I have ever been to. They were so awesome to see play live.
