DAY 241
Jack Johnson – "Do You Remember”
From "In Between Dreams"
I found this cute video done to Jack Johnson's song "Do You Remember".
My best friend introduced me to this song. It SO reminds me of Glenn's and my short lil courtship...
Let's dissect the song lyrics...
Check this out...
Do you remember when we first met? I sure do
It was some time in early September
Though you were lazy about it, you made me wait around
I was so crazy about you, I didn't mind
~`~ Glenn and I met in September, I made him wait around... briefly :P, and he definitely was the one to pursue things at first...
So I was late for class, I locked my bike to yours
It wasn't hard to find, you'd painted flowers on
Guess that I was afraid that if you rolled away
You might not roll back my direction real soon
~`~ Not as much relatedable in this verse... outside of Glenn moving things along pretty speedily...
Well, I was crazy about you then and now
The craziest thing of all, over ten years have gone by
And you're still mine, we're locked in time
Let's rewind
~`~ This album was released in 2005 and Glenn and I celebrated our 10th anniversary in 2005....
Do you remember when we first moved in together?
The piano took up the living room
You played me boogie-woogie I played you love songs
You'd say we're playing house now you still say we are
~`~ Who couldn't relate to most of this verse really... funny enough though we did have the piano in the closet in our first apartment, well a large keyboard... still counts... :P The small walk in closet was the recording studio...
We built our getaway up in a tree we found
We felt so far away though we were still in town
Now I remember watching that old tree burn down
I took a picture that I don't like to look at
Well all these times they come and go
And alone don't seem so long
Over ten years have gone by
We can't rewind, we're locked in time
But you're still mine
Do you remember?"
~`~ So yeah... good stuff... I am on an acoustic folky kick... that is very me these days.... I am loving raw, sensitive, tender emotion...
Ahhhh.... memories.... On a side note, I remember someone special on this day every year.... he would have been 11 today... I miss my son so much... all these things, these experiences, these losses and loves make us who we are... I for one don't care to rewind... I don't mind looking back from time to time, but I would never want to rip open the wounds healed by time... the scars tell the story and build the characters... the good and the bad...

240 - Antje Duvekot - Long Way
DAY 240
Antje Duvekot – "Long Way”
From "Little Peppermints"
This song by Antje Duvekot is really a fun story about her travels. What I really love is how real the lyrics sound. You can totally hear that she is drawing her inspiration from her real life experience. I love that in true folk music.
And Antje's voice is like an angel, but not in a churchy way... she has a very unique quality to her vocals... when she speaks during a live performance her voice still rings with that same unique tone... it tickles a part of your ear unlike that of the average voice... it is hard to explain...
This odd little video on YouTube features this song... it gives you a taste of the beauty of the song if you can get past the talking in the background. I recommend buying the album. Worth every penny.

239 - Ellis Paul - God's Promise
DAY 239
Ellis Paul – "God's Promise”
From "The Speed of Tree's"
Missed a couple days but am back on it... :)
This song is utterly amazing.... The lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie, one of Ellis Paul's hero's... imagine the honor of being asked to write music to one of your hero's songs? What a fabulous opportunity! That would be like someone asking me to write music to one of Ellis' songs.... whooooa... ;)
The lyrics to this song are so powerful... and Ellis' arrangement sounds almost heaven sent.
Check out this little video that features this gorgeous song.
From Wikipedia on Ellis Paul:
In 2002 Paul became friends with Nora Guthrie. Nora Guthrie is executive director of the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives in New York City where hundreds of Woody Guthrie’s handwritten lyrics — many without music — are housed. She invited Paul to visit the Archives and choose one set of lyrics to put to song. Referring to the huge undertaking of finding songwriters to write music for hundreds of her father's lyrics, Nora Guthrie stated that there was a "job description" that her father left behind that "Ellis took on".[20] Paul chose "God’s Promise," lyrics that Woody had adapted in 1955 from "What God Hath Promised," a hymn of the day and recorded it for his 2002 release Speed of Trees. Paul said that visiting the Woody Guthrie Archives was like going through a time capsule of his biggest hero and that the posthumous collaboration with Woody Guthrie was one of the "coolest things" he'd ever done."

Day 238 - Smashing Pumpkins - Said Sadly
DAY 238
Smashing Pumpkins – "Said Sadly”
B-Side of "Bullet With Butterfly Wings"
The Smashing Pumpkins might be back together, but Jimmy Chamberlain and Billy Corgan are the only original members. Personally, I will miss James Iha.
James was the lead vocalist on this song, and it's a beautiful duet with Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt. It's the B-Side of the "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" single, and I'm glad we bought the single before the album, because we may have never heard this song otherwise.
This is one of my favorite songs, because Glenn and I sing it together.

From "Mystical Shit & Fluting on the Hump"
Don't ask me why but this song popped into my head and made me smile... this is just a cute song/story.... nothing deep or amazing, just amusing and funny....

Day 236 - Maktub - Baby Can't Wait
DAY 236
Maktub – "Baby Can't Wait”
From "Khronos"
I had the day off from work and needed some energizing music. I started out listening to The Kooks, but then made my transition to my boys in Maktub directly after and it had been a bit since I listened to the full album, so I cleaned house while jamming out to this album for a good portion of the day. I adore albums that you can listen to front to back and you are actually surprised when it is over because you are loving listening so much.
"Baby Can't Wait" is a kicky fun song... it sorta reminds me of the '70's in that it has a soulfulness that really comes out as you listen to the keyboards and such.
I could not find any performances or video's for this song but I did locate the video to "Just Like Murder", (which was one of my first choices on this list actually.)

Day 235 - Aerosmith - Pink
DAY 235
Aerosmith – "Pink”
From "Nine Lives"
This song by Aerosmith is one of my favorites.... just enough rock, sexual innuendos, and a fun rhythm to make it memorable and an instant classic.
I actually went to my very first Aerosmith concert when they were on the Nine Lives tour. It was their 2nd stop on the tour if memory serves... It was my 21st b-day present from Glenn. We had nose bleed seats but they were center stage and it was REALLY fun and awesome!
The video to Pink is also pretty fun and creative. Check it out!

Day 232 - David Bowie - Modern Love
DAY 232
David Bowie – "Modern Love”
From "Let's Dance"
I heard this song come on the radio and realized how much I was enjoying it and had to pick it for my song today... I had a rough day at work and even though I was in a crappy vibe once this song came on the stress of the day melted away and I found myself drumming on the steering wheel and bopping around to the music. it just felt so good... for a brief few moments the song helped me escape the nuisances of my day... the magic of music... Gotta love it...
I checked out the video to this song on YouTube and it really cracked me up. It is obvious they are "acting" over the top but the fashion and the choreographed/synchronized dance moves of the musicians really tickled me.... fearless folks during that phase of the video era... Bowie has always been big on the visuals... he never disappoints...

Day 231 - U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
DAY 231
U2 – "Sunday Bloody Sunday”
From "War"
This has always been one of my favorite songs. Bono is such an amazing vocalist. Very few can rival his power and passion that bleeds through his vocal performances. U2 as a whole are so talented and mind blowing in general. They have honed their craft over the years and have maintained integrity but are still "cool."
The video to this song was actually my first introduction and the video is very moving and really draws you in to the performance and really the song in general.
From the U2 wikipedia:
Resolving the doubts of the October period, U2 released War in 1983.[24] A record where the band "turned pacifism itself into a crusade,"[25] War's sincerity and "rugged" guitar was intentionally at odds with the "cooler" synth-pop of the time.[26] The album included "Sunday Bloody Sunday," where Bono had lyrically tried to contrast the events of Bloody Sunday with Easter Sunday.[27] Rolling Stone magazine wrote that the song showed the band was capable of deep and meaningful songwriting.[28] War was U2's first album to feature the photography of Anton Corbijn, who remains U2 principal photographer and has had a major influence on their vision and public image.[29] U2's first commercial success, War debuted at #1 in the United Kingdom, and its first single, "New Year's Day", was the band's first overseas hit.[30]
On the subsequent War Tour, the image of Bono waving a white flag during performances of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" became a familiar sight.[citation needed] U2 recorded the Under a Blood Red Sky live album on this tour and a live video was released, both of which received extensive play on the radio and MTV, helping expand the band's audience.[31] Their generally unfavorable record deal with Island Records was coming to an end, and in 1984 U2 signed an unusually lucrative extension. Forgoing a larger initial payment, they instead negotiated the return of their copyrights (such that they owned the rights to their own songs), an increase in their royalty rate, and a general improvement in terms.[32]

The Moody Blues – "Go Now”
From "The Magnificent Moodies"
This is a far cry from their days of "Nights In White Satin." Definitely an oldie but a goodie... Glenn and I purchased this CD on Amazon and have been enjoying listening to it tonight...
I love the vintage sound on this recording... I am such a sucker for these pop ballads from back in the day... :) The back up vocals add a certain quality and charm that really appeal to me...

Day 229 - Ani DiFranco - 32 Flavors
DAY 229
Ani DiFranco – "32 Flavors”
From "Not a Pretty Girl"
Surprisingly I did not discover Ani DiFranco until the last probably 5 years or so... she is one amazing singer/songwriter.
This particular song is so insanely well written and sung it is quite simply a joy to listen to.
For such a tiny lil gal she sure packs one hell of a wallop with that great big voice. This woman hits me as fearless when it come to her creativity and "image." Different looks, experimental sounds, beats, tempo's... she is the whole package.
Check out this live performance of Ani singing "32 Flavors."
I am going to post the lyrics here and hope that you will read them and even better really listen to this song if you are not already familiar with it...
squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
and I'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you're going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said
both my parents taught me about good will
and I have done well by their names
just the kindness I've lavished on strangers
is more than I can explain
still there's many who've turned out their porch lights
just so I would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
til I'd passed and left them alone
and god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a pheonix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying back
I'm not trying to give my life meaning
by demeaning you
and I would like to state for the record
I did everything that I could do
I'm not saying that I'm a saint
I just don't want to live that way
no, I will never be a saint
but I will always say
squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cause someday you might find you're starving

and I'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you're going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said
both my parents taught me about good will
and I have done well by their names
just the kindness I've lavished on strangers
is more than I can explain
still there's many who've turned out their porch lights
just so I would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
til I'd passed and left them alone
and god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a pheonix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying back
I'm not trying to give my life meaning
by demeaning you
and I would like to state for the record
I did everything that I could do
I'm not saying that I'm a saint
I just don't want to live that way
no, I will never be a saint
but I will always say
squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cause someday you might find you're starving
and eating all of the words you said

Day 228 - Lucky Soul - Lips Are Unhappy
DAY 228
Lucky Soul – "Lips Are Unhappy”
From "Great Unwanted Music"
Glenn and I have been listening to some "indie" rock songs and this song randomly came on and it was right up my alley.
I love that it is just fun and cute and so upbeat.
The lyrics are cotton candy sweet and they just work for me. I love that the song almost sounds like it is ending in the middle section and then starts working it's way back up to the fun parts... good stuff... :) I love finding new artists I just enjoy this much right away!

Day 227 - Aldo Nova - Fantasy
DAY 227
Aldo Nova – "Fantasy”
From "Aldo Nova"
Now I know I lose some of my credibility for this song choice, but I had some great times rocking out to this song in my 1979 electric purple Oldsmobile Cutless Calais... I actually found this tape somewhere, (I can not even remember where I found it), and all I had was the cassette, no cover, case, nothin'.... and I just loved the opening guitar part. I don't really remember a lot of the other tracks on the album but whatever, still brought me good times and now good memories...
I am guessing this will be a hard one for some people that know me to believe I really liked this song as much as I did simply because of the massive '80's vibe and the keyboards used in the song. Hahaha :) What can I say, there are exceptions to every rule... :P
Check out the song here.

DAY 226
Mariah Carey – "Honey”
From "Butterfly"
So I was listening to this song on the radio at work and I honestly start moving and grooving to it when it comes on. I am not a huge Mariah Carey fan, but this one gets me going pretty good...
I enjoy the beat... Can't really understand all the words without reading them, but it is more about the groove...
Check out the video if you want.

Day 225 - David Bowie - Space Oddity
DAY 225
David Bowie – "Space Oddity”
From: single release originally
"Space Oddity" is a song written and performed by David Bowie and released as a single in 1969. It is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who becomes lost in outer space. Supposedly released to coincide with the Apollo 11 moon landing, it appears on the album of the same title. The BBC featured the song in its television coverage of the lunar landing. -Excerpt from Wikipedia.
This song was one my Mom played a lot when I was a child... David Bowie was one of her favorites and in turn one of my favorite artists as well... not so much when I was younger, though I loved this particular song, but more recently I have come to better understand and enjoy his artistic vision and craft...

Day 224 - Skeeter Davis - The End of the World
DAY 224
Skeeter Davis – "The End of the World”
From: single release originally
This song has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid... Skeeter Davis has one of those voices that is enchanting and almost ethereal.
I was reminded of my love for this song when the movie "Girl Interrupted" came out. That is one of my favorite movies. Personal reasons... The scene where Brittany Murphy's character "Daisy" commits suicide is made very intense by the accompaniment of this song as back ground music.
My sister and I have fun singing this song together too. :)

Day 223 - Phil Collins - Do You Remember
DAY 223
Phil Collins – "Do You Remember”
From "But Seriously"
This song just sorta crept in to my head this evening... no real special connections in truth, other than I just think Phil Collins is a brilliant musician and song writer and he has such a pleasant voice to my ears... Phil often reminds me of one of my favorite uncles.... The piano in this song really catches my ear... I have a soft spot for piano men... :P
The video was done back in the day when musicians were making mini movies if you will with music video's... trying to bring the song to life through visuals. I am not big on this style of video because I prefer when a song speaks for itself... (I long for the days of ugly rockers who just wrote amazing songs.) But the video is entertaining in it's own right and I have to admit the ending made me smile as I remembered it... :) This is just a nice mellow track that I am diggin' on tonight... :)

Day 222 - AC/DC - Back In Black
DAY 222
AC/DC – "Back In Black”
From "Back In Black"
So I missed my song choice yesterday as I had to work a half day at my day job and then Glenn and I had to DJ a wedding... It was rather comical at the wedding as the venue was in a very public place in a back room made to hold wedding receptions in. They had decided to just hold the ceremony and the reception in the same place which really made sense and it was decorated just beautifully. It was a fun themed wedding and everyone seemed to have fun.
The only odd mark though was that the house music was loud enough it was CLEARLY audible to everyone in the reception room and during the vows "Highway To Hell" by AC/DC was playing... we all had a good laugh though as the bride and groom had a good sense of humor about it.
Those are the best wedding moments... :) The ones that make the best memories...
Anyway, so that scenario led me to my song choice today. "Back In Black" just has a bad ass beat that makes me shake my thang every time I hear it. Just a fun hard hitting party song...
Let the good times roll... watch the video and rock out with me! :P

Day 221 - Plain White T's - Hey There Delilah
DAY 221
Plain White T's – "Hey There Delilah”
From "Hey There Delilah"
So I missed a couple days in a row for the first time. In truth I have hardly been out of bed the last few days as I have had a horrible head cold. Head cold + raised temperature + 95-100 degree temps outside = one REALLY sick Rachael.
I even missed work today because I still felt so awful. I hate summer colds...
But on with the song choice which I love. Glenn and I both fell in love with this song right away actually... I heard it on the radio first so I was actually familiar with it before Glenn had heard it.
We were impressed with the fact that the CD only costs $6! That is pretty cool... Granted there are not a whole bunch of songs on the CD, but it works as an album for sure.
I would have to say this was a smart choice to release first as this is an exceptionally great song and, for me, the shining moment on the album as well. It tells a wonderful story, it talks about love, and time, and patience, and dreams... it has so many charming elements...
The writing style is so relatable and the arrangement is so well crafted for such a simple song. Good stuff indeed.

Day 220 - Edison Lighthouse - Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)
DAY 220
Edison Lighthouse – "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)”
From "The Best of Edison Lighthouse: Love Grows"
Glenn was playing this song the other day, and it seemed like a good time to go ahead and pick it today.
The Wikipedia article sheds an interesting light on this one hit wonder.
The British pop group Edison Lighthouse was primarily the vehicle of session vocalist Tony Burrows; the group's lone top 40 hit "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" from 1970, was one of four near contemporaneous UK Top Ten hit singles by Burrows under different names. The others were White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'," the Pipkins' "Gimme Dat Ding," and the Brotherhood of Man's "United We Stand". In truth, Edison Lighthouse was merely the alias of songwriters and producers Tony Macaulay and Barry Mason, although members of the group Greenfield Hammer were eventually brought in to perpetuate the image of a real working band.
After the success of "Love Grows", Burrows left to pursue other projects, and Macaulay, who owned the rights to the Edison name, simply assembled another group to record under the alias. The second Edison Lighthouse barely cracked the UK Top 50 with the single "It's Up to You, Petula" before vanishing.
Check out this video on YouTube that features the song, as well as some information about the band.

Day 219 - Skid Row - In A Darkened Room
DAY 219
Skid Row – "In A Darkened Room”
From "Slave To The Grind"
This is one of my favorite Skid Row songs... I love singing along with this song simply because it is a seriously good vocal work out!
For whatever Sebastion Bach is now, back in the day there was hardly any rock singer that could rival his vocals, his edge, and his stage performance. He was hard core but peeerty to look at. :P
Not so much these days, very sadly, but he "had it" at one point in time and I appreciate Skid Row's contribution to music history.
